Nothing super fancy. Place one can dine by themselves near the city center.

This restaurant was named #2 best new restaurant in the US according to Bon Appetit.
The bucatuni with sun gold tomato sauce and parmesan looks so simple and delicious. Supposedly it's the dish they are most proud of.
And it's $14.
There was a video behind the scenes, and it made me really want to visit.

I need to keep it under $54 as that's all my per diem is for dinner.

That doesn't look like much to eat.

THEY USE ALL ANTIQUE PLATES THERE! ;)
When I was watching the video earlier, I spotted a couple that I have.

Well go get a damn burger then
ETA: For real though, the Hell burger in Arlington is pretty good.
Supposedly, lots of good Ethiopian in DC. There are kinds of highly praised restaurants there though. Big city, lots of options.

Central Michel Richard.
Closed a few years ago I believe.
But it was such a value. You might have eaten 4 meals for $54 there...

Brasserie beck was around the corner from my apartment, used to get mussels from there all the time...like a Belgian bistro type restaurant

I second Old Ebbitt Grill. If you have time take the orange line out to the courthouse stop and walk on over to Rays the Steaks. Their old location is Rays Hell Burger also mentioned earlier in the thread.
Matchbox in Chinatown is also pretty good.

Old Ebbit Grill has some great Oysters (in season) and the best version of Chargrilled (adds tasso)
I also liked Oyamel a lot too.
I have reviews of both on here.
