Serious Question on Field Goals

Hypothetically if a kicker was to kick a long field goal and it was nearing the cross bar with a possibility of going over or falling short and the defense has a return man. Can he jump up and block it at the last second or snag the ball and return it ? Would this be considered legal? I would like to think yes because the defense is allowed to block kicks and return them so why not .
Seriously guys help me out here.

Well you can return a field goal, so I don't see why not

I don't know for sure, but your post made me look at the rules for college and pro football, and I don't see anything saying it's illegal to block a field goal near the goalpost.

Thats how I feel about it. Detroit should start using Megatron for this.

Nope, Morris Stroud rule.

In seven years, Morris Stroud caught 54 passes for 977 yards, seven touchdowns, and averaged 18.1 yards per reception. However, Stroud became a notable special teams player — specifically at blocking field goals. On many opponents' field goal attempts, Stroud lined up under the goalposts and tried to deflect the ball as it came down. Later rule changes led to the adoption of Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1 (informally known as the "Stroud Rule"): "Goal tending by any player leaping up to deflect a kick as it passes above the crossbar of a goal post is prohibited. The referee could award 3 points for a palpably unfair act".

Well that solves the blocking part, but if he catches it and treats it like a return ?

If I remember right from the last times this came up, you HAVE to catch it. No deflecting.

what if Jimmy Graham jumps up and bends the goal post and the kick goes wide left

that's kind of dumb. You're allowed to block it near the line of scrimmage but not near the goal post.

I would say no because if it were legal, a defender would be at the goal post for long attempts every time one was made

Doesn't seem any different than goaltending in basketball.

There is a rule against this.

In Rugby, it used to be allowed to lift a guy in the air (like a lineout) to block the penalty kick attempt, but it was allowed several years ago.

That would be considered goal tending and a penalty.
If not, teams would save a roster spot for super tall folks that can jump and swat away the long field goals.

If a field goal is short and is caught, it can be returned. Antonio Cromartie had a 109-yard TD return against the Vikings on a short field goal when he was with the Chargers.
