The average fatty might be surprised at how fast you have to pump your legs to move 4.5 mph

Running is fun and walking is boring.

Everybody is different so that plays a huge part of the equation. After a 10 mile jog on hilly terrain at a 5 mph pace I usually burn about 1400-1500 calories. To get the most out of your time, hop on a treadmill and run or walk on an incline. A 10 percent incline can usually double the amount of calories you burn in an hour.

10 miles? That's a bit too much for a daily workout.

Walking/running seems like an incredibly inefficient way to burn calories. For a 200 lb guy, you could burn 728 calories in that same hour and do less joint damage, use more muscle groups and have more fun(IMO). This is per the mayo clinic.

Walking on the treadmill is nothing but fat being burned while jogging is more for endurance.

Meh.

I'll continue walking and skip a snack. My knees will thank me.

Depends on your goals. If you just want to lose weight, walking is a fine way to burn calories. There's basically no wind resistance involved, so distance traveled is what matters. Running means you spend less time exercising but that's about it so far as calories go.

That said, elevating your heart rate helps you in other ways that pure walking does not do. That isn't about burning calories, it's about giving your heart and lung some exercise.

I prefer walking bc jogging makes me feel like shite. They say if you do it a month your body adjusts, but I hate it.
That being said, you burn the calories faster. Also, on mens health they showed the after burn amounts. So walking had no afterburner, but if you ran there is a formula, based on how long you run, your body burns calories in recovery. For example you get X average afterburner for 30 min and this much (less) for every additional minute.
So if you walk a mile vs run a mile you burn the same calories during exercise, but you get like 150 extra in afterburner from running.

Be very wary & skeptical of this publication.

For the rest of you: don't worry about how many calories you burn via exercise. Every formula is different but the same guidelines apply...unless you're training for marathons constantly or putting in 6+ hours a day of hard work at the gym, calorie burn via exercise is negligible at worst and only slightly helpful at best.

Food/eating is how you adjust bodyweight. Exercise is how you shape that bodyweight.
