I donated a small amount of money and wouldn't have done it if I wasn't challenged.
It's still annoying to be the only thing on FB though

My brother died of ALS in 2005. FB has brought a shite ton of awareness to ALS. It is a terrible and debilitating disease that affects spouses and kids in a very profound way. FB has helped bring awareness to a terrible disease. I am passionate about it and the GA douche seemed a little more than insensitive. Apologies for the outburst, been a hard month.

Understandable. People just like to bitch about shite for no reason.
The challenges for no reason started off dumb, but if you are doing something that is bringing MASSIVE amounts of awareness to ALS and it's fund, then good for you. Who gives a shite if people are posting about it on facebook.
It costs you nothing, it's hurting no one and it's bringing in money for a great cause that might otherwise not even be thought of due lack of awareness.

The videos are annoying, but donations are way up. Just wish people would look into how to donate money or time locally as the trickle down from the large organizations to the families is very minimal. Funding for research is great but most of these people don't have time to wait on research. They have immediate needs that could be met on the local level. Also, just really sick of attention whores. Is it not possible to donate when challenged without the videos?

Y'all are completely missing OP's point, at least how I read it.
I took his question more as, "is there a marketing director sitting in a board room coming up with ideas to spread awareness, then thinks 'hey..we'll get people to dump ice water on their head, then make 3 other people do the same. And if not, they give money!'"
That's how I took it. Like..how did the actual concept of ice water dumping come to life.

If everyone did that, how would it have gone viral? Sometimes it helps to think questions through before asking them.

I bet that happened. And hats off to that person. It's brilliant. I love out of the box thinkers.
Or maybe it was a Moron in a trailer park who just came up with it off the top of his head? He had finished all his nattys and wanted to dump his icechest on his friend but gave him a choice first?
