Why does someone have to make a spectacle of themselves to raise awareness? Why can't you just post a status update stating you have accepted the challenge to donate and will be donating $100 to team gleason and to learn more about Team Gleason and how it helps ALS patients in need, please visit www.teamgleason.org?

That's what made it viral. Although a 20 second video is hardly making a spectacle IMO. I mean how much simpler does it need to be.

When you do it and take jabs at people that do the ice bucket challenge, you're being a hypocrite. The people that don't want to do the ice bucket but complain are doing it only for the attention of going against the grain. They want to act above it all but are actually more attention seeking than people doing the ice bucket challenge.

How about not posting a video and just posting a simple status update stating you took the challenge and then provide links to learn more about ALS? You are still bringing awareness and donating! I don't understand how my suggestion is jabbing.
Obviously a lot of people aren't going to post anything at all and will instead make a donation and not say a word. I was just trying to offer a solution to someone in this thread who clearly had a conflict.

I noticed you don't deny that you made this thread for nothing besides attention.

The guy you responded to is either trolling or an idiot, likely both.

because having something go viral is the best way to get a bunch of people to contribute to something.

As of yesterday 31.5 million dollars had been raised since the start of the challenge. Last year during that same time frame, 1.9 million dollars had been donated.

By definition, having something go "viral" means many people are participating in it. 667,000 new donors have contributed in the last few weeks.

Nah, no one is donating. That can't be right.

Because it works best. 31.7 million and something like 650,000 new donors since it has started.

The way you suggest has been tried and has not had as much success going viral. Why? That's just how people are.

ETA - it's all about marketing the idea. The numbers show this is what works best.

I have donated, along with 739,274 other NEW donors to date. Before this challenge I never though to donate to ALS. I usually just say "sure" when the guy at the register at CVS/Safeway/Walgreens asks me if I want to donate to cardiovascular health or AIDS or breast cancer.

"Washington, D.C. (August 21, 2014) — As of Thursday, August 21, The ALS Association has received $41.8 million in donations compared to $2.1 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 21). These donations have come from existing donors and 739,275 new donors to The Association."

LINK

Many people are donating AND doing the challenge.

So in one day they've gotten another $10 million? Yep, no one is donating. They're all just making attention seeking videos.
