I think you have to do it for the right reasons and in the right way. Lots of miserable people doing what you described. It took me 40 years of rebelling against the system to find balance and I'm still working at it.
Reminds me of a great song.

Jackson Browne – For Everyman Lyrics
Everybody I talk to is ready to leave
With the light of the morning
They've seen the end coming down
Long enough to believe
That they've heard their last warning
Standing alone
Each has his own ticket in his hand
And as the evening descends
I sit thinking 'bout Everyman
Seems like I've always been
Looking for some other place
To get it together
Where with a few of my friends
I could give up the race
And maybe find something better
But all my fine dreams
Well thought out schemes
To gain the motherland
Have all eventually come down
To waiting for Everyman
Waiting here for Everyman
Make it on your own if you think you can
If you see somewhere to go I understand
Waiting here for Everyman
Don't ask me if he'll show -- baby I don't know
Make it on your own if you think you can
Somewhere later on you'll have to take a stand
Then you're going to need a hand
Everybody's just waiting to hear from the one
Who can give them the answers
And lead them back to that place
In the warmth of the sun
Where sweet childhood still dances
Who'll come along
And hold out that strong
And gentle father's hand?
Long ago I heard someone say
Something 'bout Everyman
Waiting here for Everyman
Make it on your own if you think you can
If you see somewhere to go I understand
I'm not trying to tell you
That I've seen the plan
Turn and walk away if you think I am
But don't think too badly
Of one who's left holding sand
He's just another dreamer,
Dreaming 'bout Everyman

I have a good buddy that I've known since middle school. He ended up going to Alabama for undergrad. Decided he wasn't done with school, so stayed around and got a Masters.
What's he do now? Lives on an island and works at/part owns a bar. Drives a golf cart half a mile to work, gets off work and drinks every day. When he's not working he's either golfing or taking the boat out to fish.
Gotta admit it doesn't sound bad.

Have a close relative that has a lot of land and cattle out west.
I think about going out there to work cows every single day.

My buddy I work with now graduated from OM and he moved to hawaii for 2 years. not Oahu, where it's considered the "concrete jungle", but to one of the more secluded islands. His stories are amazing.

If I didn't have a kid, I would have already done it.
My girlfriend and I have discussed this on numerous occasions and making plans. Once my kid graduates high school, we plan to go to the islands. My job will allow me to work anywhere there's a hospital. If I can base myself in Puerto Rico, I can then cover that region and the Virgin Islands while making really good money.
In the mean time, we are doing our homework and traveling to prospective locations as often as we can.

A lady I used to work with just one day said forget this, I'm out, and moved to Belize. She took about a year off and lived on savings (cheap there). Now she just does a little real estate and works at a bar there, loving life.
I used to work with a guy - mid 40's, beaten down. He told me that, on his honeymoon (first marriage) he was offered a job at the Jamaican resort they were at running their recreation program (apparently he got along so well with the other guests), he declined saying "I have a job, responsibilities, a career to work toward." He told me that was nearly 30 years ago, he doesn't own a dime more than he did back then, lamented he hadn't spent the last 20+ years drinking beer and sitting on the beach.

Nah I actually like my life.
I think the key to happiness is being content with what you have and not always thinking what if.

Everyone has thought that.
But where ever you go, there you are. Changing locations won't change you. So work on yourself where you are.
Then figure out what you can change where you are. Disgusted with yourself? Start exercising. Hate your job? Line out what you need to do to make a change. Feeling empty? See a counselor or go do something spiritual (church, retreat, meditation, yoga, whatever works for you).
If you change those things and you still have the itch, bon voyage.
Well, said, Judge. Well said. You are a mentor, my friend.

Downsizing your lifestyle can do wonders to ease stress. Keeping up with the Jones' is for suckers. Save your money and live well below your means to retire early.

what are some good islands or locations. Caribbean? costa Rica? Hawaii?
I want to move to Croatia but the language barrier might be a problem
How well are you set financially? There are countries in Central America where Americans retire comfortably on Social Security checks. There are islands where you need a serious income or a lot of money in the bank to make the move.
Right now I'm looking at Turks & Caicos, Roatan and BVI primarily but that could change. St. Croix seems to be one of the more affordable islands and it's US but the access is a bit difficult.
Mt criteria is somewhere that is either a direct or easy flight preferably through Miami or a short ferry or plane ride after the initial flight.

Meh, for me it would be in the middle of the woods in Montana somewhere.

frick no. If I work I'll open a business.
Hell i knew a guy who wrote a successful tourist magazine for a few islands and the government deported him and he could not return. then they took over the magazine and "gave" it to one of the politically tied families on the islands

An old friend did just that and has been living in the Caribbean for many years now. I used to be very jealous of him but I must admit as life goes by and we get older, I'm less and less so. I complain about life sometimes but at least it's a life of substance. I guess I've come to view his life as fantasy or permanently avoiding reality. It's actually helped me come to peace with my life.
It's cool when you're younger but it'd be odd (to me) to be 40ish and single, no kids, no long term job, etc. Each his own though.
