just bought a king bed and have never purchased a mattress before. always had hand me downs.

what do I need to know? I can go 10 miles on a popular interstate and see 20 mattress places.

what are traditional good retailers or brands?

I've had 2 good experiences with Mattress Direct. Not sure where you are located though.

Look on Overstock. Find a few that you like. Find out where they sell that brand and try them out. Shipping is free. I did that with my last king and it worked out great.

King-sized mattresses are far and away my LEAST FAVORITE thing to move. Enormous pain in the azz. If you have 90° (or >) turns, tight halls, and stairs, it gets even worse. And they barely fit through a standard door. Definitely have it delivered.

We bought a Simmons Beautyrest. Within a year, we were sleeping in our own divot, and a big levee rose up between us. We turned it like you are supposed to.....did not help. I don't recommend Simmons Beautyrest.

Just bought a King Size Tempur-Pedic Cloud Elite. It was $4,000. There is no doubt it sleeps great (it's the most comfortable mattress I have owned), but I doubt it sleeps twice as good as other foam mattresses I was looking at in the $2,000 range.

Anyone in Baton Rouge should try Mattress Mart on Florida. They make their own mattresses and will actually fix it if you don't like it.

bought a memory foam mattress (king size) off of amazon a couple of years ago that someone on this site had recommended. It was really cheap considering it was memory foam...a bit firm, but I sleep like a rock on it most nights. I think it was sleep innovations. I'd get another one considering the price point and the fact that it was delivered free to my door rolled up in some box and all I had to do was let it sit out unrolled for a night.

Get it online. I saved about 50% on my Serta iSeries. I think Sealy, Temperpedic(sp?), and Serta are all decent. My iSeries is great.

If you're in Dallas, look up Dallas Discount Mattress. It looks sketchy because the guy literally sells out of a storage unit, but I've got friends that swear by it.

I purchased a tuft and needle mattress a few weeks ago. It's a memory foam mattress, and while it's definitely on the firm side, I've slept like a rock since getting it. Super cheap too. They also have great customer service, and if you don't like it you can send it back for a full refund no questions asked.

I was also looking at Casper mattresses. More expensive the the tuft and needle, but it's also gotten good reviews.
