Only great 80's thing about that wonderful movie is that it covers the ridiculous preppy angle of 80's movies (80's Hollywood loved preppies) - and the manufactured divide...of super rich white vs. non-super rich white...Hollywood version of class warfare.
The dude wore a white suit with no socks and loafers to high school and smoked in the hallways!
It does epitomize the preppy scene of the 80's to movie lore - but really exaggerates it. It's a good movie...but nobody like that is going to public school - they are at some East Coast prep boarding school - driving around in Porsche convertibles.

Breakfast Club was the 80s movie. Hands down discussion over with.
I thought All the Right moves and Can't buy me love were also very real and serious type comedy 80s movies.
Also for all the slack it gets, I thought St Elmo's Fire was a great 80s to 90s transition movie.

Not a comedy, but Vision Quest hit the 80s fairly well.

Of course, John Hughes is the go-to-80s-movie-maker, but I love Fast Times as the 80s defining film for teen comedies/melodramas. It has 80s music, the mall, the food court, theater in a mall, 80s muscle cars, arcades, fast food rivalries (big in the 80s, Members Only jackets, girls who look like Pat Benatar (spellcheck?), 80s t-shirts of movies and rock bands, and a very young Nicolas Cage (OK...that has nothing to do with it...). It may not be the best film, but the 80s puked all over it!

Recently re-watched.
Damn, that movie holds up. It doesn't pigeon-hole itself as 80's beyond the Madonna music. As a pure movie - it's almost better than Karate Kid. Doesn't have the same flow - but is solid.
