Way to go extreme on both ends. There obviously can't be middle ground on this issue
I gotta say that the overwhelming compassion shown here for anonymous 14 year kids is both surprising and heart-warming.
It's almost reached the point that I'm wondering if this is really some kind of teeny board.

Just a thought - I'm sure the parents of the Columbine Highschool shooters had the same mentality...
yeah, we should preemptively treat all of our children as if they were going to shoot up an entire school.

he received a pic from an under aged girl that was "questionable" in content. Can she get in trouble for receiving the pic to her phone?
Ha. Your wife just distributed child porn. Good luck with that. Your wife and unfortunately your son are now pederasses in the eyes of DAs across the country.

Why not tell the kid that the app exists. THEN, it is simply monitoring.
This. First off he's a 14 yr old kid that is living under your roof, eating your food, and wearing clothes you bought him. And finally, you bought him that phone and are paying for the service on that bill. That's not his phone. That's your phone that you allow him to use. And he needs to know that you can and will inspect that phone at anytime you choose and without any warning. There should be zero expectancy on their part of being able to hide anything from you. You're their parent, you're not their friend, nor are you simply their landlord.
bottom line, don't try to be cute and hide from your kids the fact that your doing your job as a parent.

I think you should read La R.S. 14:81.1 more carefully before telling this guy his wife is in the clear
Ok, I read it. Now, what was your point?
I'm not sure from the OP that any pornography was involved but, assuming it was, that statute clearly does not make it illegal to receive unsolicited child pornography so what was inaccurate about what I posted.
Of course, there is a valid reason why "receipt" or "receiving" was specifically and intentionally omitted form the long list of prohibited acts.
JMHO of course, I'm not involved in public law enforcement.

lol, I wasn't guessing Champ and no one is going to jail. Now, the girl sending the pics might have some issues.
I like the drama, but this is just the Internet, not a TV show.

Well said. Especially from an AU fan.

It isn't unsolicited you clown. She installed the app, and PAYS for the service to the tune of 50 bucks a year.
She is actively asking for suck images to be sent to her. For example, I can't go into an illegal gun suite with a thousand dollars, then claim I didn't mean to get an illegal gun if it gets raided.
So you been sneaking underage kiddir pics too, through your kids phone?
Best of luck when you go to jail and they seize your house, pedo.

I have no problem with the app being on your son's phone. At the outset, however, I would have let him know that it is on the phone as a condition of him having it.
This ^
I think something like this is a great idea. Same as the app that lets you see where the phone is gps wise.
I don't think the ops wife main issue and worry is the kid sending nudes or whatever. But what if she saw a text that her kid was asking where to get some weed or even worse?
If my parents would have had access to this kinda stuff I wouldn't have gotten into NEARLY the trouble I got into from age 14-18. You better be damn sure i plan on using something like this on any child that shares genes with me

My point is that assuming she doesn't immediately delete the picture(s) "from an under aged girl that was "questionable" in content", then she is in possession of it, which is against the law - if "questionable in content" means "child porn."

The kid does not own the damn phone. The phone belongs to the parents and the parents have every right to monitor anything on that phone. Where I disagree with them is the fact they're trying to hide all this from the kid.
Posted on 8/14/14 at 10:10 am to Rustontiger43
I think its okay to monitor, but doing it in secret is not the way to go.
Posted on 8/14/14 at 10:10 am to GaryMyMan
She is doing this because the kids he goes to school with, one of them does drugs. And he's "friends" with that kid. Yes it's just weed, but we would rather him not do it or be involved.

THIS X 10000! For those of you who don't have kids or if you do have kids but not a teenager and are saying give them privacy....good luck and start saving money for bail.
By all means you better be involved and have some knowledge as to what you child is doing...it's called good parenting. However, I wouldn't "spy". Like the Vader said, you paid for the phone and everything else they have, you let them know you have the right to check whats on it at any point. My son has a phone and that's the agreement we have. There have been multiple times usually right before dinner we do a "phone check". He goes and gets it and gives it to me. I don't ask for his password, I let him unlock it but I look at all the contents. What he does on his own time is what I hope I have taught him to do the right way.
Botttom line, you better be heavily involved in who and what your kids are doing. Letting the public raise them and influence them won't work but if you think that's the fair thing to do....have fun.

OP doesn't help his cause by framing his wife's behavior as 'spying'. Checking up on a kid's social media activities isn't wrong. But the kid should get a heads up. Maybe it'll help him model his behavior when he is not supervised by his parents.

God damn. If you want to lay it out there and tell him you'll check it, that's cool. Doing it secretly, though, is a bit over the top. He's 14. He's going to encounter a tit or two from time to time.
Congrats on your wife being put on the sex offender list, though.
