I love this movie

But I read the reviews it got when it came out and it looks like it got panned, and I don't get it.

The main criticism seems to be that it is not faithful enough to the Peter Pan storyline - mainly the reviewers couldn't get over the oxymoron of Peter Pan growing up, having kids, having a job, etc.

I guess if you look at it that way you have a point but if you forget about that and not compare it to anything, and just take the movie for what it is, its not a bad movie at all

My favorite scene in the movie is when Peter shows up to Jack's baseball game and no one is there

Here are some of the summaries from Rotten Tomatoes where it received a 31% green splatter:

quote:

Hook is overwhelmed by a screenplay heavy with complicated exposition, by what are, in effect, big busy nonsinging, nondancing production numbers and some contemporary cant about rearing children and the high price paid for success.

quote:

Here we get the uncanny suspicion that Hook was written and directed according to the famous recipe of the country preacher who told the folks what he was going to tell them, told them, and then told them what he had told them.

quote:

Also-ran Spielberg at best, a would-be blockbuster that no one likes at worst.

quote:

It should have been great but it just doesn't have enough magic dust to fly.

quote:

Longo e cansativo, "Hook" é a prova de que o nome de Spielberg nem sempre implica em um bom filme de fantasia.

quote:

One of Spielberg's rare and true misfires. It's weirdly creepy when it's not being bombastically boring.

Screw those people.

His daughter in that movie is the most rotten piece of shite daughter.

When he's trying to save them "mommy could do it"

After he saves them both and says think one happy thought and you'll fly she says "mommy"

When they get back after being kidnapped and see their tear striken face of their exhasted mother in the room praying she would one day see her kids again she says "let's not wake her"

My favorite seen in the movie is when Jack smashes the clocks. That scene pulls at my heart strings. This dialogue exchange kills me:

Captain James Hook: You know you want to. Give it a try. Go on.
Jack: This is for... never letting me blow bubbles in my chocolate milk!
[smashes his father's watch]
Captain James Hook: Good form! Bravo!
[claps]
Smee: Isn't that wonderful?
Jack: This is for never letting me jump on my own bed!
[smashes another clock]
Captain James Hook: Make time stand still, laddie.
Jack: For always making promises and breaking them!
[smashes another clock]
Jack: For never doing anything with me.
[smashes another clock]
Captain James Hook: For a father who's never there, Jack? Jack, for a father who didn't save you on the ship.
Jack: [starts to cry] Who wouldn't save us...
Captain James Hook: Who *couldn't* save you, Jack.
Jack: [tearfully] Well, he - he wouldn't. And he didn't even try. He was there and we were there and he wouldn't try.
[pulls his cap down as he cries]
Captain James Hook: [pulls his cap up] Jack... he will try. And the question will be: When the time comes, do you want to be saved? Now, don't you answer now. No, no, no, no, no. Now it's time to be whatever you want to be. Put behind you any thoughts of home; that place of broken promises.

Jack: That what?
Captain James Hook: Have I ever made a promise, Jack... I have not kept?
[gives him a baseball]
Captain James Hook: Have I, son?

That bold passage is one of the most devious, manipulative, sinister, depressing, upseting perfect lines of dialouge exchange delivered in a movie and Hoffman and the kid that plays Jack act that scene absolutely perfectly. It starts off light hearted and kind of fun and slowly turns brutal as you see the poor dejected kid get more and more upset then Hook steps in and drives the knife home.

Peter Banning: [backs away nervously] I'm not that kind of lawyer...

It is a good modern reimagining of Peter Pan.

For those who are fans of the original play and novel, it pretty much manages to X out the major theme of Peter Pan in the first place. The struggle between adolescence and adulthood.

In the original novel, all the Lost Boys are adopted by Wendy's mother, while Peter vows to never "grow up". Instead, returns every generation to take Wendy's daughter, granddaughter, etc. to be his new mother.

It's kind of a sad novel in itself as much as it's a celebration of childhood.

Hook pretty much reversed the premise of the novel, with Peter growing up. It's interesting and thought the concept was original. I enjoyed it for what it was worth and it stayed true to what aspects it could. Overall, it's enjoyable.

The animated version is probably my favorite animated movie ever and the novel among my favorites of all time.

I never would have guessed that Maggie Smith (Wendy) would have outlived Robin Williams.

The only real issue I had with the movie was Julia Roberts...eh.
