I'm fine with cutting some academic programs that don't pull their weight or have any real future. I think it is stupid to bitch about a huge stadium renovation when all the money comes from private donations and that athletic department even dumps millions of dollars back into the academic side. It is silly to say we could have redid these buildings instead of built a new addition to the stadium because the stadium addition didn't take any funds from other buildings. IMO during tougher economic times I'm ok with diverting funds from bad majors and putting them into breadwinners for the university. Then when times are good again we could expand the majors offered, or a alum can step up and save a major if its on the chopping block.

Do you, as an LSU fan and TD poster, really care about anything that happens on the academic side of LSU?

of course I do

Does it bother you that state funding has put LSU into a giant hole financially that it is having to dig its way out of?

what bothers me is a state constitution that only allows the Governor to cut funding to State Universities and State Hospitals to manage the budget

Do things like faculty salaries even make a blip on your radar screen?

yeah and so does a tenure system that allows shitty professors to hang around when they dont contribute anything to the academic side nor the research side of the University

Do you care that there are academic buildings on campus with the ceilings caving in,

except all of the turmoil on campus for years because of construction and renovation projects. Late 80s/early 90s LSU facilities were shitty, now they are beautiful for the most part.

that can be fully renovated for $15 million, but we just spent $90 million on a new south endzone?

who is we? TAF? the stadium has nothing to do with the school budget

So you're an art student.

Listen up you dirty hippy, and put down the kool.

They have already approved your building. It was approved and plans were ready BEFORE you fricking clowns had your stupid little march recently.

The fact you blithering tarts have no concept of which you speak is even more depressing than the drivel you produce.

what about them?

The things that will and are makings LSU money are what they will spend it on.
Ex: buisness, engineer, ag, sports

What exactly is the point of keeping the art dept?

-I think LSU is not aggressive enough in raising funds to build their academic endowment and they don't have enough freedom to raise tuition and fees. I'm disgusted with their lack of focus on building their academics endowment as of late.

- I think more students- especially freshmen- should live on campus. That's not going to happen until much more is spent improving the campus housing options- especially engineering and science residential colleges.

- I think that athletics contribute greatly to the academic side at LSU and keeps alumni engaged for decades after graduation. If a $90 million stadium expansion enhances the cash cow, then it's probably worth it.

- I think it's unlikely that my children will attend LSU because my career has taken me out of state permanently, so I don't see myself as having a major stake in the school anymore.

My thoughts are TAF pays for all athletic stuff and gives $$$ to the school. Also good athletics mean more out of state students wanting to go to LSU. I am a little concerned with the cuts but that is a result of our retarded state constitution and the fact that we are wasting $$$ on the HBCU's.

I can put my students in a fricking barn. If the prof is good he can teach anywhere in any environment.

Well they are in regards to football and it can't be argued.

The process is only halfway done. Being an athletic powerhouse gives the university more national exposure and money than being a top tier academic school. Then we slowly increase the requirements for admission. The problem is, we can't do that yet because LA is 49 in education and it would force the locals to other state schools. Then we'd just be UT Baton Rouge. I do feel TAF needs to give more money to the school than they do. If the athletic foundation gave more to the university, then they will be able to afford teachers from good academic schools like yale, princeton, harvard, etc. and raise the standard of education.

In 2000, 1 semester tuition and fees were $1,699.

In 2013, 1 semester tuition and fees were $3,933.

2000

2013

Please explain to me how the quality of LSU's education has doubled in 13 years and how the school is soooooo in need of money.

I'm confused as to why you think the two are equitable.

Not a dollar of state funding goes to athletics. Not a dollar of university money goes to athletics.

So what's the point?

Unless you moved here from Mississippi, you're giving your kid the shite end of the stick by educating them in Louisiana at all. Yes, there are exceptions to this, but they are just that, exceptions. You're lying to yourself if you can't admit that.

It's amazing LSU functions at all. I don't know what kind of shape LSU would be in without athletics, or if anyone who didn't have to, would attend LSU without athletics.

Seems LSU gets enough money to do what it needs to do. It's called budgeting and responsible spending. Why is it every entity that isn't public is forced to live within its means, but public entities feel they have a right to ask for and get more money every year? Do you have that arrangement at your home or job? Doubtful. But public institutions, for some reason, feel they deserve it.
