This isn't even the biggest plot hole in the series.
The biggest is them getting their asses saved at Mina's Tirith by a bunch of ghosts.

The King holds the ghost from entering into the next life. King dies. Many, many years go by and a new King Returns. That King says "if you fight, you are free". They fought, and now they're free. Pretty simple to understand for me.

neither of those are plot holes
did y'all even watch the movies or did you just have them on while you were doing other things?
you don't need the books to get this stuff.

Please explain how this is a plot hole.

So much fail. Did you even see the movie?

It's not a plot hole. The eagles aren't mindless beasts for Gandalf to order around, they are highly intelligent beings whom aren't concerned with the affairs of mortals. Reading the additional Tolkien works would give these "plot hole" folks some enlightenment.
We saw what it took to involve the Ents.

Exactly and good point.

You bring up a good point, but not the one you intended. We did see what it took to get the ents moving. But we didn't see anything with the eagles. That's partly what makes it a Deus ex Machina. Not really a plot hole but a plot device to move the story along without any explanation. That's why this guy came up with this... To give an explanation. It's just for fun

Of course all this would be moot if Elrond would have stopped the King's son from leaving Mount Doom in the first place. ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)

well there is this little bit about a major character being reduced to a moth for the movies. show biz, its a bitch.
again, anyone complaining of "plot holes" are hodors (yay for genre mashup)

Did we ever get a full accounting of exactly what powers the ring has? I read it forever ago, and I was never totally sure of all of its capabilities.
Posted on 8/6/14 at 9:03 am to FT
its main purpose and power was to control those who possessed the other rings of power, which is why Sauron gave them to powerful kings of the other races. the one ring could also amplify the ring bearer's own natural powers. thats why a hobbit had to be the ring bearer - hobbits have no natural power, no great greed or hatred. one does wonder how frodo didnt become a giant fat slob though, second breakfast and all....

It's because the eagles are hyperintellegent noble solitary beings that rarely fight any battles because they're powerful enough to be above the petty squabbles that happen below the mountains. And there's also the problem of the Nazgul. Which are ferocious fighters riding giant pterodactyl dragons.

I never understand why everyone seems to ignore this point

Because they're ignorant.
They always say "hey, there are only like 9 of those dudes in robes on these bird things, so a bunch of eagles should kill them no problem"
I think its because the movie failed to really explain what the Ring wraiths are.
They fail to acknowledge that the nazgul are ferocious viscous undead near invincible, immortal zombie fighting swordsman of the apocalypse, powered by the nine rings given by sauron, ruled by death himself, with powers and abilities greater than any man, and flying on giant fricking razor toothed, super agile, dragon beasts.

That is some serious leap in logic.
This.
Tolkien was a language expert. In English “to fly” may also mean “to flee” or “to escape”. In fact there are many other instances in the books where Tolkien uses "fly" in which the obvious context is "flee" or "escape".
