Your ‘Craft’ Rye Whiskey Is Probably From a Factory Distillery in Indiana

Wow, Templeton Rye is pretty good. Now going to their website and seeing all the BS they post about how hard they work to make it is really shitty. Feel betrayed.

I first read it as, "India." I'm almost relieved.

And this is just about whiskey. I have bad news for all you Tito lovers...

It's why I read labels and pay attention to whatever I buy whether whiskey, wine or yogurt. Not that I'm looking for a scam but because I want to know. Happens with wine a lot even European. Buy bulk already made and slap your label on it.
Good article.
Good article.

I was never under the impression that Bulleit was supposed to be 'craft'. I just heard it was good, tried it and liked it.
Now, Redemption on the other hand sells their bottles with handwritten numbers on them indicating an aritisanal small-batch process. I feel duped for having bought into it.
Still though, I did like Bulleit better than I liked Redemption.

Great article OP. I am primarily a scotch drinker and hope that is still truthful and/or transparent.
What about Tito's boondock? My wife likes it. She was formally a Ketel drinker ($24 per bottle) and likes Tito's for ($18 per bottle). I figured Tito's capabilities could not match demand and something shady was being done to stock the shelves.

I'm interested in that as well. I rotate between Stoli and Tito's depending on which one is cheaper when I need to buy some vodka. I don't have a lot of brand loyalty, but both of those seem pretty smooth for the price point and since I mix vodka for screwdrivers and bloody marys, I'm not paying over $18 for a fifth.

Stick to the Cutty Shark and you'll be ok.

I have always heard that Tito's doesn't mash its grain. Just buys neutral spirits and runs it through their still a couple of times.

Sorry just woke up. Well...
A friend of mine from BR is in the process of opening a distillery. He traveled to Seattle for a week and attended a workshop about the distilling business. One of the days was learning about branding and marketing. The speaker was a former manager of the Tito's brand who left because "they haven't distiller a drop in years". They buy and bottle.
My jaw dropped but after thinking, I'm not surprised.

Yes. And while watching Goodfellas.

That's upsetting, because in the same time frame they stopped distilling their own spirits, the price point went up about $3.

Exactly. An entire article intended to rustle jimmies.
quote:
It isn’t just small start-ups using MGP rye. Though Bulleit is owned by drinks behemoth Diageo, the highly touted brand maintains a craft whiskey vibe, especially Bulleit Rye. The brand’s website says that “High rye content has always been the signature of Tom Bulleit’s distinctive bourbon. It was only a matter of time before he created a rye whiskey.” But “creating” isn’t the same thing as “distilling,” and, as Bulleit Rye properly discloses on its back label, the whiskey in the bottle comes from Lawrenceburg, Indiana. -
The article acts as if Bulleit is misleading their customers, when in fact anyone who can read can see where it comes from.

There's something wrong if the bulk of the business is marketing.
During Tales of the Cocktail I enjoyed calling out the hipsters on their "craft knowledge".
"Jack is too commercial man, Dickel Rye is the on bourbon in my Sazeracs." If only this article came out 2 weeks ago.. Dam
Hipsters..
What's scary is how we say all vodka is the same. Well what about bourbon to a certain degree?

This is not that surprising.
However, if a brand is buying bulk alcohol, then finishing it the way they want to at their facility and it tastes good, then does it matter?
:rolleyes

I'm a little pissed High West does this. Went to the distillery in January and Campfire has since become one of my favorite whiskeys.

MGP and LDI make more rye than all of the other major distilleries in the country. I have less of a problem with this than NDPs buying stock from the big boys that doesn't pass QC
