Where are we going as a nation?

Don't care as long as I can live my life, which I plan to do, which will only be so long, and I could give a shite if all you live or die.
So many differences, so many divides. We've got one group going one way, and the other sticking to their own.
If you look at history, where has that gotten us? Has any civilization successfully broke apart and sustained itself? Are we headed to the same road?
My question, where are we headed as a nation? Are we doomed to repeat this, did we find a solution to the question and can create a perfect society, or is shite just getting worse all the time?
A powerful military, sure that will uphold us, as it has, teaming with other countries, well that held true, what happens after we have to uphold our obligations and debt to countries who don't hold our same values?
Is there any doubt that our government is out of control with spending, and trying to maintain the hold we once easily controlled?
We will have a major convergence one day, of many nations, because what choice will we have? And this nation, as we knew it, will cease to exist.
History is the measure for this, and everything you knew, or thought you knew, won't matter a damn bit anymore. Sound familiar?
tl;dr don't care

I have always believed that America was heading the direction of the former Yugoslavia. Seems like we will eventually balkanize into multiple nations and ethno-states before it's all said and done.

The nation isn't going to go bankrupt or end in any of our lifetimes. Ever since this country was founded people have been predicting the end of the country within the 10 years following their prediction. None of them have been right so what makes people think they're right now?
America is going to be here for the rest of ours, our children's and their children's lives. If you want to read early American's mindsets on the impending doom of this country, read "Antebellum American Culture"
The people from back in the late 1700's through the mid 1800's all had the exact same concerns we do today. It's really quite interesting how similar they sound to doomsday predictors today.

The people back in the mid 1800s you mention were accurate in some aspects, because a civil war did occur a little later on. Although it didn't end the nation, it did divide and potentially could have ended the country as they knew it.

More and more people want the government to pay for services of any kind. That will (already has) started the demise. A very wise and ahead-of-his-time economist once pointed out that:
Government is that great fiction in which everybody seeks to live at the expense of everybody else.
This country will be fiction soon.

Seriously, though, you bring up so many issues, it's a pretty loaded post. But states rights could solve some of them if we still had them to where the states could actually take action.
And as far as the military goes, War Is Peace, and as long as we have conflicts, we'll always have that "need" for security.

A lot has changed since then, but hey, we're still a country now, and that won't ever change.
History says different. A couple hundred years is small potatoes in the grand scheme. This nation has changed a lot since the last 50 years.

never said we were going to

Ever since the bible, people have been predicting the return of Jesus. I am just as unsure as perhaps you are. Saying it won't happen is a prediction, is it not?

ya, I know it is, but pretty bombarded from all sides today as it is, kinda hard to choose just one angle to discuss.

We're rotating about the Earth's axis once every 24 hours,
around the Sun every year,
around the galactic center every 250 million years,
and we are flying apart and away from every other place in the Universe at a rate of 1e-19 cm of space per cm of distance per s.

You don't have to explain gravitational pull. We understand that you're the only one with your own orbit on this board, but that doesn't mean we don't understand basic physics.

And that country did cease to exist - the Civil War decided that issue. But the rest of the founding principles remained.
Now we are talking about the very fiber of the nation. Slavery was one thread, but now it is the complete tapestry that is being dissolved. Given another ten years of this "progressive" march 'forward' there will be nothing left of the founding ideals of the nation.

Slavery is back ... just in a different form now.

If you don't care where the nation is going or about your fellow man, why start a thread asking their opinions about the status of the nation?

Ah yes, "progressing"....., the question is, what are we progressing towards? It appears the more "progressive we've become the more chaotic and divided society has become. This country used to tout that the US was the "melting pot of people" but that's when immigrants assimilated into to the culture now we see a splintering of society by people who want to make the culture of their native country their primary culture, hell we're moving towards being a bilingual country and this may be a good thing or it may be a disaster but it's what the progressives want and you can't stop "progress".

LOL at the doom and gloom in this thread. This country will be just fine for as long as anyone will be around for.

It's a daily requirement for at least one thread per day to predict the end of America because of one bad 2 term Democratic president
