Currently in Destin and the waves have been the biggest i've seen in a long time and the currents are the strongest I can remember.

Sad. I remember in the early 90's a football player from Mandeville High went missing in Ft Walton during our spring break down there. We just stood on the beach the rest of the day staring out into the surf. His parents drove down that night and his body was recovered the next day a few miles down. The resort was just melancholy the rest of the trip.

Man, that sucks. Those rip currents can overtake even strong swimmers. Seems like every year we hear about people drowning there. But people are more scared of the sharks.

Shame. Terrible tragedy.

We were in Destin this past weekend, and the waves were huge. Didn't let my kids boogie board this time, or even go in the water much.

Sad that he died. :(

Yeah, I guess every teenager going to the beach should have the wherewithal to read about rip currents before he goes

it's called parenting... and teaching your child about the outdoors before turning them loose...

the gulf isn't a swimming pool....

even if they are schooled - it's easy to get disoriented under water... one big breath underwater.... and... its tough..

It was really freaking rough on the gulf coast last weekend. The wind was howling.

Such a sad story. Was at the beach about 10 miles from this and noticed the current picking up big time around 230 pm.

It went from calm to dangerous FAST
