Reagan's response to Russia after shooting down Korean 747 (1983)

If there was ever any doubt, please use this as reference to compare leadership styles of Obama and Reagan under almost identical circumstances.
Reagan's response to Russia shooting down Korean 747 - 1983
"And make no mistake about it: This attack was not just against ourselves or the Republic of Korea. This was the Soviet Union against the world and the moral precepts which guide human relations among people everywhere".
"It was an act of barbarism born of a society which wantonly disregards individual rights and the value of human life and seeks constantly to expand and dominate other nations".

a) it was the soviet union, not russia
b) we were in conflict with ussr at the time
c) a state did the shooting down, not a insurrection.

This is compeltely different circumstances.
first, russia intentionally and knowingly downed it. Today? no one has a clue who dunnit.
second, we were toe-to-toe with Russia back then. today? Its Ukraine who is toe-to-toe, and we have NO obligation to them.
a little different, dontcha think?

it's good to have your "independent" views on this matter.

An insurrection that blocked the crash site long enough to recover the black box and ship it off to Moscow. If you think these rebels don't get their marching orders from the Russian government, then you're not very bright.

The circumstances are different, but even if Russia didn't shoot this thing down, it remains the most evil, heinous nation this world has ever known.
I'm not too religious, but I firmly believe that the devil had control of Russia, and maybe still does.

We do now if the Russians shot down a plane with 23 Americans on board.

I don't think russia is evil. putin is just a megalomaniac bent on world domination. or at least trying.
I think you could say the Khmer Rouge was the worst. Or maybe nazi germany.

1. The Flight originated in the US. That matters quite a bit.
2. The plane was shadowed, targeted, and taken down by unmistakeable intentional Air-to-air fire.
3. 62 US persons were aboard, incl a Congressman (so 61.5)
4. Intercepts of deliberate soviet action against a perceived surveillance threat were released by our govt in short order.
5. The Soviets intentionally interfered with the salvage effort and investigation because they were sure whatever was recovered would confirm that they had little basis for believing the flight was a spy job.
We did place some additional equipment in Europe, though.

If this shoot down was done by the insurrectionists, then Russia bears much of the blame, because it is Russia who has intentionally destabilized the region.

The 1980's just called me and I told them I wish we had our foreign policy back

Right. The burgers weren't as quite as good in the '80s as they are in 2014.

They were sure they were shooting down one of our spy planes.
That incident remains shrouded in mystery.

This. Though I think it was some moron insurrectionist who got trigger happy.
But he wouldn't have had a SAM without Russia destabilizing the place.
