A few weeks ago I was getting an oil change at Sears and I asked the guy (Who happens to be a manager) to give me a quote on replacing the front brakes and rotors on my f-150. He types it all up and hands me a printed quote with a bottom line of $329. I request quotes from 2 other repair places and both come in just under $500.

Go with Sears, no brainer.

I drop it off this morning and hand the lady my quote and ask them to replace the brakes and rotors (They were to warped to be turned).

I go to work and 45 minutes later my phone rings. They try to up sale me on doing the rear brakes because they are less than 50%. I decline and ask them to only do the job we discussed. They say, "Okay, you are looking at $476.95".

I respond, I had a quote for more than $100 less. The lady then informs me that the manager left labor off of the quote and that the mechanic will not do the job if he does not get paid. I call bull shite because the mechanic gets an hourly wage, and any mark up on parts could surely cover their mistake.

I had, after all, decided to go with them rather than other companies who gave honest quotes. After 5 minutes of arguing about doing the right thing and honoring their quote the lady says, "We are putting your truck back together, and you can come pick it up..."

*CLICK!!!*

I am furious. Ranting to my coworkers much to their delight, and contemplating calling the regional office of Sears to complain.

Apparently in the mean time they had called the manager who was on vacation and explained the situation and his original mistake.

He personally called me from his vacation and informed me he told them to do the job at the agreed original price/quote.

Was it that hard to do the right thing? That is why the salesperson I was arguing with will never be a manager.

Thoughts?

Commission and most people just say screw it and pay. That's why they do it.

What do I win?

Sounds like an honest mistake.

Personally, I would have wondered why they were so much cheaper on such a small job.

I would've probably split the difference with him.

Mechanics are usually paid per job, not hourly.

God forbid the person with no authority to authorize such things doesn't.

Your mistake was going to Sears in the first place.

I had a similar situation with Firestone. Got an email about a sale on tires that was a very good price and it began the next day. I needed new tires so I bring it by that morning and ask for the special I have printed out.

Their response was "oh we can't honor that as we don't have that tire in stock and we can't pull it from another store...but we can put on these tires for $65 more a tire."

After a call to their regional manager, I had the tires put on 2 days later at the sale price.

For front brakes? Knock me over with a feather.

The last brake job I did for my 06 GMC, the best pads and rotors from Advance was less than $150 and it took me less 2 hours to do.

I admit I'm not an OT baller, but I do have 5 vehicles to maintain so the easy shite I do myself, oil changes, brakes, etc...

Which was HER CHANCE to catch the mistake THEN. Regardless of whether she had to honor it or not, she should have caught and brought it to your attn. THAT was a 2nd mistake by the company. Mistakes cost.

After waiting til shite was torn down to call and all, I agree with what you said. Most people (myself included) would've said go ahead for lack of time so I'm glad you did what you did.

He's what happened. Somebody, probably a mechanic, looked at the work order after he put the truck on the lift and realized that the estimate did not include the labor.

They had a conference, and decided to make it up on the back brakes which would have been a little higher than usual. Then they called you and asked nicely if they could do the rear brakes yada yada yada. When you refused, the tech probably said he wouldn't work for free.

Somebody ratted out the mechanic to the manager and he probably called in a favor owed by the mechanic, so the work was done.

Glad that their devious plan didn't work out.

Do you not remember them turning Ron White's can into a tripod?

ETA: if you can tie your shoes you can do your own brakes and rotors quickly and on the cheap.
