How would you secure the border and handle this crisis?

Start by deterrence. Once word spreads that you're in a detention center for 3+ months only to be deported immediately following the detention, it may deter a good portion of those willing to brave the desert. First time, 3 months. Second time caught, a year. Third time, shark tank.

As it stands now, come one come all and you'll be released into the community with a promise to appear? wtf.

You simply have to reduce the reward factor attached to sneaking in illegally. If it becomes impossible to secure employment or state provided benefits then few make the effort to sneak across.

Difficult, but with even an ounce of effort it could be done much more effectively than it is now. There are several aspects to the border that need to be addressed:

1. What draws these immigrants here?
2. Why do they not use the legal option?
3. How can we physically keep them out?
4. How can such a physically barrier be monitored and enforced?
5. How do we pay for it?

Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you eliminate the free government benefits, eliminate their ability to undercut the minimum wage, and make it easier for them to come legally, you can quickly stem the vast majority of the tide of illegal immigrants. However, it is infinitely more difficult to enforce those things if the physical barriers are not enforced or put in place.

I'd say it is very difficult given that there's been an immigration problem over the Mexican border for 30-40 years now.

I think a much better approach is tackling the problems that create the demand for immigrants. Go after businesses that utilize illegal labor more aggressively, provide a path to citizenship for those already here, and provide a path to citizenship that wish to come here for work.

Easily done with what it will cost to welcome the new Obama electorate coming across the border.

Shrinking pie...expanding, competing and desperate interest moving in. Not rocket science.

harsh prison sentences for people who knowingly hire illegals - and cooperative deals with the people they exploit for their testimony.

Impossible. Policing an area that size is too expensive and would require too much manpower.

The proper course of action is to make it unfavorable to come here.

- Harsher penalties for hiring those without documentation.
- Banning non-citizens or those without legal documentation from using any public services.
- Requiring legal documentation from the parents before a child born on USA soil is considered a citizen.

Those are just a few ideas to start.

It isn't a matter of keeping them from entering, it is a matter of removing the incentive.

I'm not against immigration...I like it. I hate that allowing immigrants to come here is no longer in our best interest thanks to the growing welfare state.

With that said,

It is impossible. Just imagine the logistics...there is no need to explain.

Keeping those who hire illegals responsible is much more desirable than building a wall or militarizing the border.

As long as US businesses want this cheap labor, it will come. IDGAF what you do.

Work with all countries south of the border and develope economic policies that benefit the people and not the pockets of agri-business corporate types.

America's economic policies have a lot to do with the flood of "illegal" immigrants.
