Finally got into Civ5 and I really enjoy it.

Played a game on hard last night. Things were going well until about 1800. I noticed I was losing in score, so I went with an aggressive expansion approach.

Big mistake. After annexing two cities and winning 1 war, I immediately go to war with the other country on my continent.

Due to high unhappiness across my newly expanded empire, my people begin to revolt and burn all my farms. Meanwhile, my naval game is weak and artillery starts taking out my land troops who were pushing the western front.

lessons learned:
don't go to war when your people are unhappy
Don't declare war on a country you have 5 trade routes with...frick
Don't have 3 coastal cities, with only 1 privateer to defend

I enjoy the fighting and don't just want to sit back and tech up for science and culture victories. If I go the full "war" approach though..how am I supposed to take out assholes on other continents

A lot of it depends on the civilization that you choose. Some are better for scientific victories and some for military. Usually the science/cultural civs with a 4 city base are the most efficient way to go.

Check out the civfanatics forums. They have tons of good tips.

Try a mod or two. There are quite a few that will help balance the game (especially the ridiculous warmonger penalties).

What expansions are you playing?

CivFanatics War Academy

That will give you some tips.

Roads between your cities will help with the unhappiness. Also lux resources will cut down. Also there are happiness generating building to cut down on the unrest. My suggestion is to sell off some of your smaller satellite cities that dont give you much benefit.

Typically, I will finish the game with 5 maybe 6 cities. I dont start large scale wars until 1800s and usually I try to get others to fight for me via denouncing and ratting others out with the spies then I sit back and watch. Also, I sell cities I capture to my allies or sometimes sell them to the person im about to go to war with to bankrupt them before my blitzkrieg.

My favorite civ is Babylon. Get walls of babylon and good archers early on and the they pump out great scientist very fast. Usually by the turn of the 18th century im 7-12 techs ahead of everyone else.

Sorry to hijack, but I'm bored with my current games and looking for something new to play. Having never played any Civ game ever, how steep is the learning curve? I was thinking about giving it a go.

You are going to have issues with unhappiness all game unless you prioritize building around multiple luxuries. Buildings that supply happiness are also critical if you are going to be going to war a lot. Notre Dame is a huge milestone. I personally find it easiest to win via science. Also keep an eye out for what your cities are demanding and trade for them asap. Ignoring your cities' demands is a good way to have a very unhappy civ.

Usually I choose the Germans and play the peaceful isolationist country until I reach modern military technology and build my military up to extreme numbers. Then I go on a rampage starting in the 1800's. The Mongolians and Aztecs are the only ones who give me any kind of trouble militarily. The Mongolians have beaten me several times and taken some cities.
