Audio receiver input needed. Not normal home theater setup.

My parents have a huge deck/gazebo out at their property. Their place is way out in the sticks and they hardly get any radio reception.
I'm going to wire speakers up for them in the very near future and as of right now they only have a directv dish and a flatscreen tv out there. They do not have any clue as to what they'll be using for music out there. I kid you not, they have a boombox out there right now and play cds over and over and over....
I want to get something that can take the speakers that we got them (nothing fancy, just some indoor/outdoor speakers), possibly get them hooked on spotify or something of the sort, and will also have inputs for the directv/tv. I doubt they care about hooking it up through hdmi, but it's possible.
The simpler the better because if they had their way their music would still be coming out of a needle on a turntable.

Nothing wrong with that but it sounds like any basic receiver will get the job done. How many speakers are you hooking up?

You will need a 7.1 receiver that has multi-room capability.
Something like this
ETA: I misread your post. Just get the cheapest 5.1 Yamaha, Denon, etc you can find at Best Buy or Amazon.

why not just put directv on one of the music channels?

Just buy a 2 channel stereo receiver and 2 nice outdoor speakers.

2.1 would be way, way better for his application. I wouldn't even hook up a sub, so it would really be a 2.0 system. Surround sound in a dedicated theater room, otherwise just buy a stereo.

I agree, but most stereo receivers are not as easy to use with a home theater set up. Buying a home theater receiver(5.1 or otherwise) leaves them with more options down the road.

How tech savvy are they? There are good options for the best quality, but if you dont trust them with a remote or stereo front with a lot of buttons, there are better more simple options

Let's start at the basics...
1. Just how out in the sticks are they ?
2. What do they have for internet ? If they can barely get radio, I can't imagine they have much for internet.
3. They could always just use the music channels that are built in to DirectTV
