Eh...expectations have a good bit to do with it. That being said, he isn't playing well. He might not be hurting us a ton, but he isn't helping. That's poor play in my book.

When the ball is coming towards a player, the first time they touch it.

Literally your first touch of the ball when receiving a pass.

I'll use it in a sentence:

"Eddie Johnson has the first touch of a garage door."

Thanks for reply..Is it the opinion of the SB that this dude has a bad first touch and derps the ball away consistently? Is just a select few posters?

What the other responses say but I'll add that it's one of the most significant skills in the game that separates the good players from the absolutely elite ones.

When you read people on boards like this saying that the USA is behind the soccer bluebloods in terms of technical skills, the consistent ability to put the ball exactly where you want it with your first touch is key among those skills.

Name some other examples where he "derped"?

It's mainly the usual over exaggeration you see with fans on any message board.

That said, Bradley hasn't played quite as well as he normally does in any of the three group games. At the same time, I would also argue that some people expect him to be a bit better than he his because he's so often had his best games for the USMNT.

I'm a huge fan of AS Roma, where he played the last year and a half, and the incredible games where Bradley seems 100% elite world class followed by some mediocre games where his touch and passing are a bit off seem kind of normal.

Even in his "bad" games though, people concentrate on one bad pass and do overlook that he's always one of our most valuable players for all he does in the match outside of a single attacking move.

We're all hoping for one of his best matches in the knockout round but, to be frank, if he played like that every time he came out he'd still be in Europe starting for a club like AS Roma.

He usually doesn't. Like everything in sports, it can come and go.

A "good first touch" is one that makes your next move (after you receive the ball) a successful one.

This USA-El Salvador highlight from last year's Gold Cup has some good examples. Notice how some of the "first touches" taken put the next move (pass or shot) in the right place. Watch for how the players receive the pass and the next action immediately after. Particularly, notice the first touches taken at 6:15 and 8:50.

There are also moments where Eddie Johnson and Chris Wondolowski don't receive the ball as cleanly and have to fight the ball out from under their feet. There's also an El Sal player that takes a heavy touch (too far away) to gather around the 3:00 mark.

Take a look at a few more highlight videos and just look at first touch.

I don't know. You seem to be the Bradley expert. You said he derped on the big stage. Name some examples. You've obviously watched him closely for Roma and TFC this year, as well as his time from 'Gladbach and Chievo.

Please shut the hell up.

Bradley is damn awful and everyone has said next game he would come out. Guess what, he's still awful and this team made it through in spite of him.

For all the crap he's getting, no one is mentioning that beautiful cross in stoppage time he delivered that almost tied the game. I wonder what the opinion would be if Dempseys header found the net.

Great point. Besides actually advancing, that was my favorite part of the game.

The reports of Bradley's demise have been greatly exaggerated.

He stunk on ice today. Dude couldn't control a pass to him if his life depended on it today. It was like he had buckets on his feet.
