Has anyone built a natural pool themselves?

My Dad wants to build a natural pool. By natural, I mean no filtration pumps and chemicals, just plants and rocks and whatnot. He thinks he can do this himself.
I keep telling him that this will be an epic failure and he will just create a giant mudpit in his backyard, but he is old and old people do not listen to us young folk.
Has anyone does this themselves and been successful? Or am I right here?

Never even heard of that. Sounds like what he wants is a pond, but will end up with a mudpit that the mosquitoes will love.

natural pool
Cause that is what he will have
Refer to Nascar's pond thread. Perfect size. Think "Endless Pool" size.

So nothing to keep the water moving at all?
A pond type system with a waterfall might work (no filtration), but the water can't just be stagnant.
ETA:
He would have to use some sort of lining.

What a disaster. Just hope he doesn't spend too much money before calling the pro's. Prayers sent

There was a thread on here a while back about these things. I can't imagine this being a good idea in this climate.

I think that those are really only realistic outside of the SE United States...they are cool and cool looking but there are too many inherent issues in the south for them to be realistic (like snakes, mosquitos, etc.).

no...something like this
That is actually pretty cool.

That is really cool actually, but if he's in LA, i don't think he could pull it off.

there would have to be some type of waterfall feature to keep the water flowing thus allowing the plants and rocks to actually filter the water
I think he knows this...maybe

Call me a pessimist, but building one of those doesn't exactly seem like building a fence.
He planning on digging the whole thing himself?

He better make sure nobody pees in it

I just don't see that being successful in LA.
It's pretty cool tho.
