So I've never played a Zelda game: why does it get so much love?

I've heard Zelda talked about for a long time but never got around to figuring out why it was so popular. I've played a lot of games that I think would be similar to it, where you collect loot, upgrade your weapons, and upgrade your character. So what makes it different than other games that do the same thing? Why has it had staying power with multiple versions of it, while other games similar to it might have one or two expansions?
I'm pretty much 100% certain that I'll buy the new Zelda coming out for the Wii U as soon as it comes out. It looked pretty awesome at E3. It's got me wanting to play the other Zelda games now. Just wondering why I should be as excited about the new Zelda and other Zelda games as some are...

The series was one of the first that introduced a large map open to exploration. A Link To The Past didn't hold your hand and tell you where to go or what items you needed to advance through a certain dungeon.
You should try ALttP. It has aged well.

Nostalgia is part of it. They still make great games but when they first hit, they were revolutionary.

I kinda figured it was this. But like you said they're still great games in that genre. I'm sure the story is top notch.
What order should I play the old Zelda games in?

Tired of hearing the nostalgia reason for any game some people might not be in to. Minus a few hiccups, they are great games. Some of my favorite gaming memories. Seeing a 3D Hyrule Field for the first time will never be forgotten.

I would start with the earlier releases. The main reason is because since you have never gotten into the series, if you start with something like Skyward Sword and then try to play Link's Awakening, you may not enjoy it. That's just my opinion.

It's lazy. They're games of incredible quality that are always familiar but extremely fresh.

Would you say you felt nostalgic typing that?

I've never played either. I'm not a big fan of the play style of the game, but the photos I saw posted have me really intrigued with this new version. I'm hoping its a little more first person than what I've seen in past versions(playing from above in a more 3rd person role).

That's what I was thinking

It was always the challenge. You had figure out how to beat each dungeon, figure out where to go next, there were no hints, no help except a map, and you kinda found everything on your own by exploring. There were a few times when I was like WTF do I do next.....and I had look at a guide online. But try to limit using them, it ruins the fun. And I also love the music.
