Everyone who loved Chappelle's Show was bitter when he walked away. We all remember how mad we were at him for not coming back and continuing to entertain us.
Yet, as the years have gone by, Chappelle's Show STILL airs on Comedy Central, and people STILL tune in to watch it, and there were only 2 or 3 seasons that aired 10 years ago. That's the sign of something great, and that show has become a benchmark of comedy.
I can't imagine that show going on and starting to slack as the seasons went by, and hearing "Chappelle's Show was so much better in the early years!" type of shite. It would be tragic.
Now, I'm happy Dave walked away and left the show as great as it was. He probably still struggles with his decision, but at least it doesn't look like it was the wrong move afterall.

Still annoyed I went to his Houston show and he did 20 minutes of jokes and bolted. Not sure why he was on tour if he didn't give a shite.
By comparison I saw Seinfeld on his 4th show in two days in New Orleans. Guy went almost an hour and a half and you wouldn't have known he did the same show a few hours earlier. A true pro.

I totally agree with this, but he knew what he was giving up and did so because he thought that was the best choice for him. Could he have helped out a few more people with the extra money more seasons would have earned him? No doubt. That being said, I strongly believe that you only live once and you should do what makes you truly happy. No matter how much money you make and give away, there would still be untold amounts of suffering in the world. There's nothing wrong in my mind with making sure you are happy first and foremost.

In Living Color was pretty memorable/quotable and lasted 4 years. Would also love to see Chappelle's take on Real Housewives. So much potential material floating around.

That kind of bullshite can be laid at the feet of everyone, Chappelle included.

Would you be able to look at your friends in a run like that and say "sorry, guys, I already got mine and I'm not letting The Man dictate my work." I'm going to Ohio.
If it were affecting my state of mind and/or mental health? Yes absolutely.
Why does he owe a debt to the people who worked on the show, even if they were friends? I'm assuming they were compensated for their work. I can't imagine that Chappelle promised them they would get rich.
At the end of the day these are jobs we're talking about. I would not lower my quality of life just so a few people I know could have a job a little longer.

I'd argue you lower your quality of life and mental health for others constantly. We all do. Nobody owes anybody. That's not how the world works and that's not what is being said. Anyone can walk from anything, family included.
There are people sitting in horrific marriages for their kids sake, financially speaking.
If you're gonna be the star, and it's all hinged to you, you accept responsibility for many lives. This is the reality of the world and it's why we say CEOs are worth their weight, they carry that burden.

It seems like Letterman is aggravated at Dave's blow-off answers.

I was there. He fricking sucked. It was obvious he was only there for a money grab. He spent 40 minutes on stage bullshitting with some buddies he brought out.

Yeah, by choice. No one is making them.

Again, by choice. And the idea that people do their kids a favor by doing this is debatable at best.

I'm sorry but I completely disagree with this.
The dude told jokes for a living. How seriously can you possibly take him? If a person hinges his life on Chapelle's ability and willingness to tell funny jokes then I'm having a hard time feeling sorry for him.
Chapelle was an entertainer. He made some money doing it. The fact that others got a slice if that pie doesn't mean they own the pie and are entitled to more. That's absurd.
Hell, even a CEO doesn't have the level of responsibility you're pinning on celebrities. They are responsible to their shareholders and are charged with giving them a profit. That's it. They're not responsible for lives.

This, big time. Third Leg is weird as hell in this thread. Even if those people helped make Chappelle was he was (and no doubt some of them did), they still aren't entitled to anything, and if Dave wanted to walk away from it for his own reasons, then so be it.
Also, some of the reasons he's come out and mentioned over the years seem like good enough reasons for me (and for the people he worked with...provided they were true).

Its complete bullshite. CEOs in general are vastly overpaid.
If your success hinges on another person, well, you need to consider carefully who you rely on.

What's weird is that people think we have zero responsibility for one another yet seem to go along with this assertion that being creatively limited was destroying Dave Chappelle as a human when there are a billion people that don't have enough to eat.
He should have brokered a better deal if it was that bad. He signed the contract that should have stipulated creative latitude. He could have taken that show anywhere.
I've never used the word "entitled" either. I'm simply stating that Chappelle was not able to create his wealth alone, but he was able to strip wealth from others on his own. Responsibility comes with that power. He was the only one that could broker the deal and the only one that could walk, tearing it all down.

This is a great thread on a great webpage for unusual people to passionately share weird/strange counter-opinions about the most inane topics of non-interest.

What do poor, starving people care if Dave Chapelle cancels his show? Is he hurting them by not telling jokes on a TV that they don't even own?
Look, no one is throwing a pitty party for Chapelle. We are saying that he doesn't have to do a job he doesn't want to do just to help people close to him. These people were paid for what they did.

Why? Why can't he just quit? I am really having trouble understanding why you believe he has to keep working.

The people who worked with him were paid, no?

Who did he strip wealth from? We're people giving Chapelle money against their will?

Dude...it was HIS deal to tear down. Who signed the contract? Who did the the contract obligate to perform?
Why is Chapelle responsible for some person who got a job as a result of that contract? The person was paid a salary. That's all he was owed.
