Michigan's attendance problems...I think we can relate

While student tickets at LSU are very fair at $12 a game, some of the problems addressed in this article definitely feel familiar. I'm not saying we're having the same problems, but I think we're closer than we realize.
I know the bigger scoreboard being an electronic billboard was a one year thing, and boy was it horrible. But it's things like that, and in stadium promotions for mcdonald's or coke zero for every timeout (with Georgia's played other games across the country) kills the crowd.

If that’s true, maybe they shouldn’t have increased seat prices by an average of $100 each since Brandon took over. Perhaps they should stop charging six bucks for a hot dog, five bucks for popcorn, and four dollars for water. Maybe they should stop showing ads between plays on the big screens for corporate receptions at Michigan stadium, which start at $9,000. Fans can get all those things at home for less, including the ads. They can only get the marching band at the big house.

Survey after survey points the finger for low attendance not at cell phone service or high definition TV, but squarely at the athletic department and college football itself. Fans are fed up paying steakhouse prices for junk food opponents — and junk food itself — while enduring endless promotions. The more college football caters to the TV audience at home, the more fans paying to sit in those seats feel like suckers.

After a friend of mine took his kids to a game, he told me, “Michigan athletics used to feel like something we shared. Now it’s something they hoard. Anything of value they put a price tag on. Anything that appeals to anyone is kept locked away—literally, in some cases—and only brought out if you pay for it. And what’s been permanently banished is any sense of generosity.”

I think the thing that aggravated me the most is/was the nickel and dimeing of the tailgaiters

I completely agree. LSU is very close to the same problem-people staying at home and watching the game on TV. A family of four with season tickets will probably spend around $8 to $10,000 per year. Saban is a really good coach but $7 Million a year is just stupid.

Yet there is a waiting list 10 miles long for tickets.

So they are spending 100 per person per game at the stadium ? I don't think so.
Like it or not, college football is an arms race. That ain't going away. It takes money. LOTS of money to be competitive.

I bet you don't pay anything. Parking, tail gating, food, transportation, hotel, tradition fund, tickets, and other misc costs and away games

Well, at least Michigan fans can get wi-fi on their smart phones inside of their stadium.

People keep posting that on here, but can someone actually provide a link to a credible news source that quotes an LSU official saying that they are going to take down all of those ads this season?

IMO, if they serve beer, problem solved.

It's all stupid these days. Think about how much enjoyable college football was 8-10 years ago.

it's in an arms race into a market bubble. when that bubble bursts, the corporately held season tickets won't be enough to fill the stadium. I'm not talking about the pricing out of the joe schmo "fan all his life but never attended LSU" guy. I'm talking about the middle class family involving an LSU graduate being priced out. and it won't happen tomorrow, but the speed of which we're heading to that point is accelerating exponentially every off season

I've seen it somewhere, can't begin to find a link. But the extra ads were put on the scoreboard as compensation for the loss of the SEZ scoreboard. Now that we have two scoreboards in the south endzone to litter with ads, the NEZ one will be a little less cluttered. maybe. probably. hopefully. probably not.

I would guess the average fan is not staying in a hotel or going to away games.

I think alumni live almost every where

Well yeah. What I am saying it the typical fan, the extreme majority are driving to the game, then driving home and not attending away games much less every away game.
There are some that are no doubt, but those are the few and far between.

With all the new money coming in from the tv contracts, sec network etc- it seems the LSU athletic dept could back off some of the ridiculous things they are doing to raise money. Charging for on campus parking was a new low.

The official reason stated for doing that was "the recession." The recession has been over for several years now.

Love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Greed has and still is bringing down the general economy and spills over into any endeavor which can be squeezed to the nth degree until it is unrecognizable. There are some greedy SOB's in this country who are determined to get theirs no matter what they destroy in the process.

I read that whole article and I see lots of similarities. Tiger Stadium is also not the same as it once was, and for me (and many others who post here)it is due to the over-marketing that we have to sit through at the stadium and the feeling that the athletic department is trying to stick their hand in my pockets to grab more money.
I read the comments below the article, and this comment, from an Oklahoma Sooner fan who can also relate, hit home...
It isn't just us. This happens everywhere. And it is a shame.

I’m not there to listen to headbanger music blared over the PA instead of hearing the marching band. I’m not there to watch people wave at the “fan cam” on the jumbotron, which is sponsored by a regional convenience store. I’m not there to see incessant marketing and donor recognition on the field.

LSU was behind the times with this. We're also one of the cheapest tickets in the SEC. If you're not willing to spend the money there's people out there that are. Having asses in the seats means very little to LSU when the tickets are sold either way.
