which is better and why? I'm getting to the point where I need to choose which way to go.

accounting seems to be better if you're at one of the state schools. just about everyone i know that has graduated from LSU or SELU with a degree in finance has had problems finding a decent job without going into accounting anyway. if you're at lsu the auditing program is supposed to be top notch.

Personally, if you have the time and energy....I would get a double major.
If that isn't an option, I would go with Finance while taking as many acct classes as possible, unless you are dead set on sitting for the CPA exam.

go with the internal audit concentration if you can, jhop.
that lsucia designation opens lots of doors for you with internships and full-time opportunities after graduation.

if you want to stay in Louisiana i would say accounting. If you are open to moving to the northeast then i would say finance, with a lot of accounting electives.

Accounting and it's not even close. The reason why is your job opportunities will be ten fold with an Accounting degree over finance.
Most employers these days who high FIN majors encourage them to take the classes needed to sit for the CPA exam anyway.

if they work in accounting or need to be CPA's
otherwise, it doesn't matter.

Alot of employers like those three letters behind your name even if you don't do accounting.
I don't have stats but most Fortune 500 CFO's are CPA's.

Depends what your career aspirations are, if you want a higher paying job right out of college go accounting, if you are more entrepenurial go finance, you'll have broader education and be able to go into different fields, not jus audit, accounting work.....finance you can go into real esate, insurance, banking, investment banking.....
if your more sales oriented go finance, if your more analytical go accounting
if your more sales oriented go finance, if your more analytical go accounting

you can do all of this with an accounting degree

Are they necessarily separate? I think at my school, every degree inside the business school was a BS in Finance, but then you picked your focus (accounting, marketing, legal studies, etc.)

cash - don't be a smartass........
i've seen general studies majors go on to be CEO's of companies.......at the end of the day all a degree does is upon doors.....it's up to the individual to succeed and make his or her bed....
as I said before if you have a more analytical personality and desire to make more money out of college (typically) go into accounting
if your more sales oriented, you'll have broader options with finance, might not make as much from day one, it will be up to you like any other degree to make it rain

once again i don't disagree
The question was accounting versus finance. My point is someone with an accounting degee is qualified to do anything someone with a finance degree can, but not vice versa.
I know several people with finance degrees who work(ed) for places like Wal-Mart, E&Y, Accenture, Shaw Group, and Entergy and they were all encouraged to take the CPA exam(most needed additional classes to be able to sit).
I have a friend who is on of the founders of Thornton, Harvison, and Rhodes which is a fast growing comercial real estate company in BR. He has an accounting degree and now sells real estate for a living. He is not doing auditing like you said.

Accounting by a mile.
Accounting will open you up to Big 4 opps, Fortune 500 finance (yes, finance) positions, and of course all manner of audit/tax roles.
Financial sales/brokerage ops is doable with any degree.
Investment banking is extremely tough to get into, even if you go to a top school.
Finance is very useful, but the job opps relative to accounting just aren't there.

Holy Cow. Your choice is accounting or finance? Ouch. Can't you find something more fun, or at least more interesting, to do for the rest of your life?

Holy Cow catdog. You don't need any help with your investments or someone to help plan your retirement?

Maybe he wants job opportunities
What would you suggest? Poly Sci? Mass Comm?

I'm sure you're right. It's just a shame you have to sacrifice "interesting" for "opportunity."

Depends, as an employer for a medium sized business, I do tend to favor accounting degrees over finance degrees for bookkeeping administrative duties. However, I'd hire a person with a finance degree over an accounting degree in the performance of market analysis or projected outlook positions.
