Yep. I wish there were a way to have every citizen own a business for one year. This oversized and out of control government would be chopped down to size in no time flat.
People would finally realize just how much of a burden government places on our economy.

True...reminds me of a quote by Ayn Rand, 1966:
"The majority of those who are loosely identified by the term “liberals” are afraid to let themselves discover that what they advocate is statism. They do not want to know or to admit that they are the champions of dictatorship and slavery."
Govt exists to grow itself. And that means ever increasing control over the lives of individuals.

I think one of the things lost in this discussion is just what value we're going to place on private property rights. People treat this as a "pro-gay vs anti-gay" issue when it really isn't the broader point. Refusing to bake a cake, as someone said, is not in and of itself hate. Harassment is a different story. But just where do we draw the line about how people can choose to use their own property? And who gets to draw that line? The government?
Good thing the government is noble and trustworthy or else that power might have the potential for abuse!
Why protect the ignorant by outlawing their ignorance? Let them display it for the world to see. They're the ones who will pay the price.

fricking ridiculous... A private business should be able to choose who it wants to do business with.
Yep.
Some people don't understand that freedom includes freedom to do shite that you hate and think is disgusting.
These people are entitled, backwards hypocrites.

That was the argument used to have segregated sections of stores and to deny service to black people at hotels and restaurants.
A result of Jim Crow laws and a problem of gov't mind you.
That was public discrimination using tax dollars, this story is private action using no tax dollars.
Try again.

Funny how christians are fighting so hard for their right to hate. This is ironic from a religion supposedly based on love
Funny how liberals can use mental gymnastics so state that "preferring not to do business with" now equals "hate".
I prefer not to do business with my in-laws. They are rich and it would probably benefit me financially but I'd feel very uncomfortable doing so. Does that mean I hate them even though I love them?

Aren't you also a states right person? These are local and state laws. I find it incredibly inconsistent that the same people who believe marriage should be decided by the state disagrees that the state (and city) shod be able to make their own laws on community standards.
State and local laws can, are and will be oppressive just like federal laws are. When they discriminate against property rights in a manner like this story, they need to be scrutinized. Just like federal laws violating property rights are scrutinized. When a law violates the constitution, no matter what level it's at, it's brought to attention and dealt with.
This isn't a good argument.

The difference is that local and state officials require far fewer voters to remove them from office. That's why federal office holders act with such arrogance.

Remember when liberals would say shite like "I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to my death your right to say it"?
Posted on 5/31/14 at 5:49 pm to darkhorse
I've said this before and I don't know if it would be legal, but can't he simply call his bakery a bakery club and charge one dollar for membership. Then once it's private, deny membership to anyone he wants?

Hell its mentioned eight times in the bible you shouldnt eat shellfish. Yet I don't see anyone refusing to bake a cake for a cajun wedding.
You are either unaware that Jesus declared all foods clean, in which case you fail, or you know better but are being willfully dishonest, in which case you also fail.
quote:
If a woman walks in 6 months pregnant she didn't get refused for a wedding cake even though sex before marriage is wrong.
That doesn't invalidate the marriage. Maybe you should do your homework before posting.

Wasn't there a little dust-up in the 1860s that had something to do with people being forced to provide labor? Damned sure "involuntary servitude" appears in the 13th Amendment.

Link? Or are you being willfully dishonest?
Jesus was a Jew. He didn't stop being a Jew.
quote:

Now you're being willfully obtuse. His point was, if a Christian cannot service a gay wedding because sex between people of the same sex is a sin, then to be consistent, he must also deny service here because premarital sex is a sin.
But you knew that. You may not have known Jesus was a Jew and remained kosher, but you knew premarital sex was a sin.
Eta: a better analogy might be marriage where one or both was previously married. Jesus said that was an adultery and we know adultery is an abomination.
Thus to be a truly consistent Christian one cannot bake a cake at a wedding where at least one person was a divorcee. Unless his name is Revelator who apparently has been given a pass by Jesus. :-)
