TV and mhz question

Bought a loaded LG smart tv a while back, only to realize that the pic was still not right in certain instances....ball flying thru air and stuff like that...basically sports.
When shopping and comparing, I was sold on the 240 mhz instead of 120 because the guy said if I watch a lot of sports, the 240 would make the movements better. Fast forward a few months and I notice when I change channels, the information bar gives me the current mhz # it's NO WHERE near 240 mhz. So I call the tech hotline and the guy says it's because the providers don't send it at the 240 level! So I would never realize the need for 240mhz! Btw, I have fiber.
Is this correct?
I don't remember specifics, but it was several hundred more expensive for the 240 than the 120. And no doubt the store who sells it knew if the limits if mhz in my city. If fiber can't give you that, what can and where?

First off, you are referring to the display refresh rate, which is measured in hz, not mhz. It's all hertz, but mhz is a million times faster than hz.
Second, it is likely that your TV has lots of settings for this, simply because nothing is filmed at 240 or even 120 frames per second. Most broadcasts are still 30 frames per second, I think. Blurays are 60, I think. When a TV takes the source and adds more frames, it has to guess what all those extra frames looked like. For a lot of things, you get that "soap opera" effect when this happens, so almost all TVs let you turn it off, or it might be off by default.

yeah, it's actually around 24.5, which is surprising that it's still smooth.

It's called interpolation, for the ones who don't know.

agreed. i'm very disappointed in the lack of progress made on TV quality in the last 5 years or so.
all the last 5 years have brought (IMO) is
- contrast ratio shenanigans
- 3d bullshite..where are all the 3d tvs now? you used to couldn't swing a dead cat in best buy without hitting 20 of them.
- 120/240 hz bullshite
- curved tvs (lol thats the new hotness)
- 4K (this actually has promise but comcast will kill us on data overages if this actually takes off)
i'm not saying the picture quality hasn't improved dramatically..particularly for LED..but i've really held off buying a big ticket TV while they sort out the gimmicks from true tech progress.
imo the only things that have improved is contrast ratios for LEDs, thinness/weight (thanks to getting rid of that flourescent backlighting LCD horror show) and much bigger TV sizes for your money.

Same. I have had the same Samsung LED TV for about 5 years now.

I'm going to buy one, but I know going in that it will only be useful with my computer plugged into it.

woah. I really always thought that 120 was ideal. I didn't know that bluray was only at 60 hz. I feel stupid now haha

Pissed me off that I paid more for nothing. And I type incorrectly in the op, I meant no way they DIDN'T know when they were selling me that.

I'm starting to wonder if I even have it turned on. TV is probably 5 or 6 years old haha

This brings up a question I've had for a while. I've been with plasma for years so I don't have much experience with led. Watching other people's TVs I see where the higher refresh rate helps sports. However, regular TV looks terrible sometimes and fine others. I messed with one TV turning the motion enhancement on and off, stutters both ways. Is this something avoidable or do all led TVs looks like that?

Turn off the motion enhancement settings for anything that's not sports (unless you like the interpolation/"Soap Opera" look). Your eyes will adjust to the appearance of stutter either way momentarily.

frick man! Is there a type/tv out there that does adjustments or whatever on it's own. I just want one that that has the right best picture no matter what. Does it exist?
