why didn't Ned Stark ask for a trial by combat?

The deal was he was to confess and get an opportunity to take the black. Obviously the boy king wasn't in alignment with the deal.

I realize that...the answer is that it put his kids in danger though.

I was drunk when I asked this last night

you really don't think Barristan Selmy would have championed Ned? They were the only two honorable men left in King's Landing

right but do you think he would have? They seemed to have a mutual respect for one another as honorable men

Who would have won between Barristan and Jaime anyway? And can a kingsguard be named champion by someone accused of treason against the crown?

Seriously doubt it. If I was Ned I would have called up the GreatJon and rolled the dice.

Only a knight of the Kingsguard can champion a queen in a trial by battle if she has been accused of treason.

Someone is entitled to a Champion when he cannot fight for himself (if they are female, injured, crippled, a dwarf, or otherwise incapacitated).

It is less grievous to deny a choice of champion if, say, the champion is unable to arrive for the trial in a reasonable amount of time, or is unfit to fight, especially if there are other champions more readily available to the accused. If the accused is a royal, the champion must be one of the Kingsguard.

If I'm not mistaken, it cannot be dismissed by anyone, because that would be offensive to the Gods, even by the Royal Families. We learn this from "The Hedge Knight"

Because be was guaranteed a spot at the wall. There was no need for it. No one knew Joff was a sadistic frick at the time. Even though Tyrion was guaranteed the same thing Shea betraying him sent him over the edge and he made a snap decision.

"Trail by combat" is one of the stupider elements of Game of Thrones. It makes no sense, and it's not even clever.

You're one of the stupider elements of this board, almost never make sense and is certainly never clever.

Another question...Why did the Crows put up with so much shite from Craster?

I can see needing his hospitality...but frick that dude...take his shite and station a crow there for the safehaven purposes.

Trial by combat is pretty awesome and has given us some of the best moments of the series.

This is all a moot point anyway because Ned was not on trial

They eventually didn't. Do you remember the mutiny at Craster's Keep?

Well that would be violating his hospitality, and it's a serious crime for the everyone in Westeros.

I watched that episode last night

I guess the question was more about why Craster felt he could treat them so bad and not get stabbed in the face...what gave him the confidence that 50 dudes that used to be criminals and bastards wouldnt overtake his arse after he treats them like shite.

Not a chance, Selmy didn't like Ned. He blamed Ned for Ashara Dayne's death.

Well Craster was an old man nearing the end of his life and up to that point he hadn't been openly hostile to the NW. And he gives them sanctuary for when they do their ranging north of the wall. And he also gives info on Mance Rayder and any other news north of The Wall.

His father was a member of the NW too while his mother was a wildling
