...in the New Orleans area, what would it be, and what dishes would you recommend?

I've only been to Lilly's, Magasin, Ba Chi, MoPho, Namese, and Pho Cam Ly. Ba Chi is my favorite. I need to make it to the West Bank.

I was looking at yelp and I saw a guy who mentioned "candy-coated chicken" at one of the places... anybody have a clue what he's talking about?

At this point I've had everything but Kim Anh's, Namese, and MoPho. I was gonna do KA today but they were closed.

Spicy Shrimp Pho at Lilly's is just friggin' AMAZING. Pass on Magasin, but I only went once and probably should give it another shot. Pho Cam Ly has solid stuff for their rice and noodle dishes (just not the pho).

ETA: If it's in New Orleans East I don't know shite about it. That's not a real place for me.

+1 on Tan Dinh, though if you're a novice eater looking for a friendly introduction to the cuisine, the nice family proprietors at Pho Tau Bay will help you out.

Tan Dinh is tops for me. Their menu offers a large variety of all kinds of awesome food. Lilly's & Kim Ahn's come in a close 2nd and 3rd.

Tan Dinh is tips tops for pho IMO. However, Pho Orchid, though not the best at any one dish, gets my vote as best all-around restaurant if you are looking to introduce someone to the cuisine or try a variety of dishes.
