We do have plenty of Yellowhammers here in Alabama, and FYI they're really called Yellow Shafted Flickers. You're right about the Civil War connection, and when the Confederate Veterans in Alabama attended reunions, they wore a yellowhammer feather in their caps or lapels...
Alabama made the Yellowhammer its official bird in 1927, and is the only state to have a woodpecker as it's state bird.

I know South Carolinians are referred to as Sandlappers. I thought Mississippi was Clay Eaters.

The Yellowhammers won 3 tough battles during the Civil War, but they claim they won 22. Thus started an honored tradition in the state of Alabama that lives to this day.

I live across the street from the Tuscaloosa VA.
Today was the Run For The Wall motorcycle event.
My dad ( who passed in May 2007) was the Vietnam
Veteran's of America Alabama State Council
Chapter 301 Veteran of the Year in 2006.
That's how I found out about the Yellowhammer
history today.
Remember and cherish our vets!
My dad was a die hard Auburn fan

Many people on this board don't take it well when you bring up the War of Northern Aggression. Because of political correctness, you are likely to be accused of being insensitive, intolerant, or even a racist. Ridiculous that native born southerners are supposed to forget our heritage to appease the masses.
