Memphis Family Struggling to Overcome Poverty

I know I am often the first to blast welfare queen's but I saw this story the other night and figured I would share. It's good to see a woman realize her mistakes and fight to help her kids make a better live for themselves.

Patricia Whiteside invited WREG to walk in her shoes for the day, to see what it was like to live in poverty and in her reality.
Every morning, the single mother of seven starts planning dinner, because if she wants the food stamps she gets each month to last, budgeting is necessary.
Usually Patricia does her grocery shopping and runs errands before work, but last month, she lost her job as a nursing aide because of cutbacks.
“After I lost my job, I thought about the bills. What am I going to do?” she said.
While trying to land new work, she was offered a part-time minimum wage gig at her son’s daycare.
“It would be really tight. Very tight,” said Patricia.
So after her errands, she and her 2-year-old went to get a physical. If she passes, the job is hers.
She then rushed to pick up her 13- and 15-year-olds from school. They’re enrolled in Veritas College Preparatory Charter School in South Memphis.
She said it is a better education and opportunity, but in exchange, she must provide the transportation.
Family dinners are a must for the Whiteside family, so when Patricia got home, she fired up the stove.
Her three adult children still live at the apartment, so they help out. All three are in college, some on scholarships and all working part-time jobs.
As for her other children, they try to find their own space to do homework. Seven kids live in the three bedroom apartment, so space is limited.
In between the chaos, Patricia kept an eye on her kids.
In their neighborhood, she said drug dealers are on every street corner, and gunshots are heard regularly.
“Gangs and drugs, unfortunately, that stuff goes on in schools now,” said Kendall Whiteside.
Kendall is a senior at Central High School. He just got a scholarship to University of Tennessee Knoxville, so he hits the books instead of the streets.
“I’ve got to study. I’ve got to get stuff done,” he said.
“I wish I had made better choices, but now, it is here, and it is time to move forward,” said Patricia.
She moves forward by making sure her children learn from her mistakes by going to college, getting good jobs and waiting to have kids until marriage.
“I am glad I have seven kids. I am a proud mother. They are not in jail. I am not a grandmother,” said Patricia.
As her children piled up their plates and sat down to eat, they took a moment to pray for a future, because in that moment, their worries and problems seem insignificant. They are thankful for what they have.
“I don’t believe money is happiness. Happiness to me is seeing my children laugh,” said Patricia.
Since we interviewed the family, Patricia landed the part-time job, but it wasn’t enough hours. She plans on going back to college this fall to finish her associate degree and find a job where she no longer must rely on government assistance.

I certainly agree that she doesn't have a moral claim on your (or my) money, but I would be more willing to help her out (voluntarily) than some other examples we are exposed to.

This is why the welfare state in theory is not a bad idea. The system doesn't always work out for good, honest, responsible people. I am certainly proud that we have a support system in place for her. Unfortunately, people like her are rare to find in these programs.

Well Latrell Sprewell made 21 million a year and he could barely feed his 3 kids. WTF was she thinking having 7?

7 kids
Why?
And for every person like her that is trying hard, there are 10 that arent trying at all

I'm glad she's taking some initiative but this really should have happened after the first child....or second or third.....

She doesn't but her kids do. They're blameless.

God's will. He has a plan for everyone.

God's plan for you is not to your liking? He has a reason. What do you suppose that reason is?

Getting your tubes tied should be required as soon as you stick your hand out for the 1st welfare baby.

We have it tough because you have so many different cultures in our country. it's frustrating that there can be a culture where having seven kids is relatively normal, as I have no interest in that type of shitty life and resent having my taxes go to support it.
I'd be much happier paying taxes in Sweden or Norway or Denmark where people look like me, think like me, have my culture more or less, have my work ethic and interests.

I suppose the only way for the kids to benefit then is put them in gov foster homes and tell the mom to grow up. Then the gov can raise liberal voters and the gov becomes the beneficiary using our tax dollars. Oh well, give her a blank check it would be cheaper.

Anyone know the formula for figuring out just how much welfare she is receiving for each child? Does she receive some kind of welfare other than food stamps for each child?

So this is the best example they can show us? Where are the kids dad? I'm sure it's the same man. I say frickem,And "kick" save your God references, I'm no Christian. However I did use to give a frick. I know longer do. Let em fend for themselves.

Yeah, the 7 kids thing is pretty bad. Our system has no checks/balances so to get more money, they have more kids. Really a messed up way of doing things.
But, it looks like she is trying, so I give her credit for that, and would prefer my tax dollars go to her than 90% who are receiving government assistance.

I got my Swerve on many times thru the yrs, but had enough fricking sense to not impregnate some stupid bitch. Guess these animals don't.

My kids arnt rewarded fro bad behavior ,so why should my tax money be given to bitches who apparently had bad behavior at least 7 times? And I. Not talking about having sex, it's the having it without protection. Hell maybe after the 3rd one ' be smart enough to use a condom! No it doesn't feel as good. Again I say frick'em let them fend for themselves instead of Kids= mo money that's Democratic Party math.
