From what I've read, they all jumped from the basket.

Hey I pass by those on my bike rides in the AM. Something cool about looking up and seeing those balloons floating around. I've only seen safe takeoffs, landings, and floatings (?)

My question is why the frick do people still go in hot air balloon rides.

There isn't anything smart about it, and there are many deaths related to this every single year.

I just read the NTSB has 67 fatal accidents since 1964. Doesn't sound too bad

Update said they've found 2 bodies so far, but not the third or the gondola...so sad.

Another note: As I scanned the news sites looking for updates I found this article, with the following picture:

I'm not usually scared of clowns but on the giant clown head balloon.

I would have jumped and hope for a lucky break like some people have gotten after falling.

A firefighter from NYFD during 9/11 put it best - people aren't jumping to their deaths, rather they are being forced out because of the extreme heat. He said that instincts will push you out before you even realize what you've done.

I once got to float around BR in an untethered balloon. We had a rough landing in a small congested spot, but that was pretty fun. The quietness when you're floating sans for the pilot giving it more gas is an eerie feeling.

I would have looked for a lake or a pool below and possibly a trampoline, and then I'd have jumped.

Wicker was what I rode in...In the situation those people were in, they would not have a chance no matter what the basket was made of.
