I have both the Southwest Card & Sapphire Card.

All of my airline purchases are made on the Southwest card & all dining out purchases are made on the Sapphire Card. Lately I have been using the Southwest card because I am so close to the Companion Pass.

I use the Delta Reserve card but like others have said if you don't travel a boat load just get one of the other generic cards.

Golfer- you have any preference in Delta cards? I am platinum this month. Got the reserve card for skyclub access and the extra 10k MQMs but not sure it is worth it once I hit diamond in a few months.

I don't know if the other cards do this, but united gives a free checked bed for the round trip. This saves $50 a trip. You have to fly united though.

Southwest doesn't have checked baggage fees, so their card doesn't have that.

I would get a Chase Sapphire Preferred or American Express Gold Rewards card. You can redeem their points (miles) for a lot of different airlines.

The American Express card gives 3X points for airline tickets, 2X for gas and 2X for groceries. It is the card I use the most for rewards points.
They run promotions throughout the year with several airlines and you get a bonus to your miles when you convert. For instance, there is currently a 30% bonus when converting points to Virgin Atlantic. I prefer the British Airways Avios so I am waiting for that promotion and they are extremely flexible miles to use and give a terrific return when used to fly American Airlines domestically.

Next in line for useage for me is the Citi AAdvantage World Traveler Platinum Mastercard.

Delta Amex. They give you 40,000 points in the first month if you use like $500.

You can find flights for 25k miles, but most are around 32,500, or 42,500 for high peak flights.

You also get priority boarding and free checked bags.

The Delta Reserve AMEX is the only one (I think) that gives you MQMs. You also get a SkyClub membership, Sky Priority, and free checked bag.

It's been the hardest card for me to get, even moreso than AMEX Platinum.

I'd look at where you anticipate flying to. I got a Delta card when I was living in the ATL but I rarely fly Delta anymore now that I'm back in BR because flying through Atlanta only makes sense if I'm going east. Flying any other direction using an airline with a hub in Texas usually makes the most sense. There are also cards like the Capital One Venture card that lets you use any airline.

Do you have to use their system to get the airline tickets or can you transfer your points/miles to an airline? This is key because the programs inside the credit card companies system tend to value a mile at .01 where transferring the points to an airline gives a much bigger bang for the point/mile.

I have the Barclays card and the way it works is that you pay for your travel and you can redeem it for miles after it posts on your card. You also get 10% of your miles back every time you redeem back.

The miles are essentially dollar amounts. 40,000 miles is $400

$440 with the mileage rebate.

That is why I use the Amex and convert the points to miles. 20000 points can get me as many as 28000 British Airways Avios. I can use those Avios to get a roundtrip ticket on American to Miami from Dulles for 15000 Avios. That's generally at least a $300 roundtrip ticket that I can get effectively for $150 in miles. It's a much better value than using 25000 American Airlines miles to get the same flight.

We had a delta sky miles card but could never redeem the points because those seats were already taken or the date was blacked out. The non airline cards don't have seat limits or blackout dates. There is also no fee to redeem your miles.

Being flexible in travel times is the key. I can fly out on weekdays and extending a vacation or choosing dates to travel that give me flights isn't a problem.

They give you 40,000 points for sign-up bonus with a spending requirement and give you a 20% bonus for using points on travel. So $400 in points becomes $500 towards travel

Delta Plat Amex earns MQM's but none of them give you Sky Priority, they give you early boarding as if you were a Silver Medallion.

Get a card that let's you choose your airline so you aren't limited. Even hotel cards let you earn miles or points. Chase has a few.

I have capital one venture card. Very good, double miles for everything and if you have rewards banking you can combine your miles. Only bad thing is if you redeem for cash instead of miles then they cut it in half. Save the miles for travel, you get the full amount!
