I can sit and watch Stalag 17 a hundred times in a row.

the british didnt fricking execute people. it's like emmerich made them out to be nazis
It was so laughably over the top. The only thing missing was Jason Isaacs tying down Joely Richardson to the railroad tracks

I never said it was historically accurate.
But it is a badass movie.
There's never been a mad man executing people in a building and one lone Street cop who happened to be there had to save the day only to find out it wasn't just some hostage crisis but a major terrorist plot, however, Die Hard is still one of my top 5 favorite movies.

The Patriot is a clear guilty pleasure of mine. Sure it's absolutely ridiculous and over-the-top, but when viewed as a comedy, it's pretty incredible.
Take the funniest scene in the film, when a white Sout Carolina plantation owner says he's proud to fight alongside a black slave. You know, South Carolina, the first state to secede from the union. Just about brought me to tears.

I just watched Catch 22 again, probably for the 20th time.
Several years ago, I talked with a B17 pilot, a delightful man, and I mentioned Catch 22. He had been stationed in Italy during the war and all he said was "sometimes it got pretty hairy up there."
Great movie that shows how "hairy" it got.

It's a war movie made for cheesy action junkies like myself and I love it. It's over top obnoxious unrealistic perfection.

I can watch the last 20 minutes of Stalag 17 over and over - Holden just kicking their a$$es.
I just forgot to put it on my list.
Looks like I never did post one.
Stalag 17
Bridge on the River Kwai
Where Eagles Dare
Full Metal Jacket
Cross of Iron
Bridge Too Far
Paths of Glory
Missing in Action I and II
Tora Tora Tora
PT 109

Needs more John Wayne/John Ford cavalry pics
(Any movie with Ben Johnson is automatically a keeper)

we'll just have to disagree. the only way i could see myself liking it is as a parody of sorts, which it's not. roland emmerich is one of the worst living filmmakers

Tougher to call them "war" movies, though, as they more comfortably fit into the western genre.
However, I tend to agree with you -
Just the cavalry trilogy, Fort Apache (Hank Fonda, Shirley Temple all grown up ), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (The Duke, Harry Carey, Jr. AND Ben Johnson, FTMFW), and Rio Grande (Maureen O'Hara, ) - are worth watching on a lazy Sunday with nothing better to do.

Ace, you will not steal Maureen O'Hara as your classic Hollywood crush. I have dibs. She was gorgeous.

Black Hawk Down
Thin Red Line
Full Metal Jacket
ETA: Apocalypse Now, though I consider it less of a war movie and more of a convenient adaptation of Heart of Darkness.
I've only seen Patton once, but I think I'll put it up here.
