Yeah. They give you the option, but they aren't really setting you up. I know a lot of people in that program who have problems finding jobs in safety because they graduate with 0 off shore experience. They aren't willing to go do some grunt work that has nothing to do with safety just to get experience. I think the program should have some kind of externship program.

If you want to get a job that is halfway worth a shite, you don't go to Nicholls State. Not sure that that's really just an opinion though.

Thibodeaux ain't bad, bruh. Houma is like a 15 minute ride. I would live in Houma and commute to class if I were you.

It is unecessary. With NSU, ULL, LSU and SLU, you've got four, 4 year colleges within about 2 hours of one another. In a state this size (pop. roughly 4.5 million) there is no need to have that many colleges in such a small area.

LOL. Most of my family went to nicholls, as well as a lot of their friends. All have what most would consider good jobs.

There are more Nicholls educated or non-college educated people in Houma/Thib making 6 and 7 figures right now than people give Houma/Thib credit for.

it really is mind-boggling....the marine supply service industry is lining pockets big time.

Granted, for each super successful NSU grad, there are 20 mediocre grads.

I am also shocked at how proud of their real estate they are.

The Houma-Thibodaux area is a great place to work while taking advantage of all the sportsman resources. Fishing is insane.

Yep, this is spot on. No one from Nicholls has ever gotten a decent job. We all just work on shrimp boats all day.

I enjoyed my time there. Like most have said, Thibodaux is a really small town compared with other college towns in the state. Houma isn't too far away though. So between the 2 cities, there's enough to keep a college kid happy. Class sizes are pretty small compared with other schools, which was a plus in my mind.

And it's just a smaller place on the whole. If you had issues at ULM resulting in you flunking out, a smaller place may not be a bad idea.

This could be said for the majority of public universities in Louisiana.

I mean, graduating from Nicholls likely doesn't hurt you if you are looking for a job in the area, but assuming this guy doesn't plan to stay in the Thibideaux/Houma area, I would say his degree from Nicholls won't be nearly as appealing as a degree from other similarly sized colleges.

Id imagine it's tough to be competitive with a degree from Nicholls outside south louisiana.

Maybe so. I'm in Baton Rouge with my Nicholls degree. I know several people that went out of state with their degrees as well. But, you are right, that the name recognition isn't there like it is for other state schools.

true to some extent. As far as recent graduates, outside of the immediate area, the NSU degree is weak. Just being honest. If you plan to stay near T-town, then it'll shine brighter.

Depends on what your major is. I'm an accounting major. I wouldn't be able to get a good job if I had gone to Nicholls State and majored in accounting. I wouldn't be making anywhere near the money that I am making today.

Would also depend on what your definition of this is.

Not saying this at all. Like I said above, it depends on what you major in. Nicholls State is not LSU or Tulane in terms of recognition. A degree from Nicholls State University (especially outside the state of Louisiana) is not going to be valued as highly as a degree from LSU or Tulane.

There is something to be said for going to college and graduating, especially for kids that don't necessarily have the means to go anywhere else. But if the means and ability are there, I would recommend to any kid to go to a more recognized school than Nicholls.

The people I know that went there said it was like 13th grade. I think they even had a building that had a bell to let you know when class ended. No thanks.

Lived within walking distance of NSU while in high school. Nothing wrong with Nicholls at all, just always wanted to go to LSU.

It has a good culinary science program. Other than that, it's a party school. I think it's sole purpose is training teachers and oil field guys, which isn't a bad thing.

I've got to say one thing about Thibodaux. They must be doing something right. People from there think it's God's gift to the world. I don't see it, but there must be something there.
