Minimum wage boost blocked in the Senate

Democratic bill to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 was met with overwhelming Republican opposition in the Senate today, where it failed to garner the 60 votes needed to move past a key procedural hurdle. The bill, which was introduced by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), would have raised the federal minimum wage from $7.25 per hour to $10.10 per hour over the next 30 months, after which automatic annual increases in the minimum wage would be executed to account for inflation. Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee was the only Republican who voted in favor of letting a debate on the measure proceed; it failed by a margin of 54-42. After the vote, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), tweeted, "Republicans just turned their backs on millions of hardworking Americans who deserve a fair shot. This debate is not over." The federal minimum wage has been increased 22 times since it was first implemented in 1938, most recently in 2007 when it was raised from $5.15 per hour to the current $7.25 per hour by Democrats who had just gained control of both chambers of Congress. The annual pay for a full-time minimum wage worker currently sits at $14,500, which is below the poverty line for a household of more than one person.

So, they want to mandate inflation rate COLAs for those on minimum wage, but not for the military. LOL. Fun times.

1)Includes another adult who most definitely should be working
OR
2)Includes children meaning adult 1 qualifies for myriad public assistance.
Hence, it's a pretense to pretend ANY such household is attempting to get by on only $14,500.

Why didn't they just go to $10 then?

Only reason they need to raise the minimum wage is because Obama has destroyed the value of the dollar.

Because nothing could possibly go wrong with using baseline budgeting for increasing government spending, right?

Minimum wage law put in effect in 1938 at $ .25 per hour.
Fast forward to 2009, and it's changed to $7.25 per hour.
Did some math: 4.59% rate of annual growth for the past 75 yrs.
Don't really know what to think. Wish I was making that in my bank accounts.

How the government has the constitutional right to tell an employer the minimum he must pay an employee is beyond me. All minimum wage does is a) raise prices to the consumer (further increasing that poverty line they point to) and b) put a lot of people not worth the minimum wage out of work. A business can pay two people for $14.50 now, plus the FICA and Medicare match plus state and federal unemployment tax plus any benefits, or pay 1 person for $10.10 to the do the same job - a fairly menial job that does not merit a single transferable skill. As an employer, I would just put onus on fewer workers to keep my overall costs down rather than retain everyone and pay them 50% more.

Minimum wage jobs are not meant for making a living....why is this concept so God damned f*cking difficult for people to understand?

I can't even tell if he is being disingenuous or he actually believes the bull sh*t he's spewing. If it's the latter, that's a scary thought.
Honestly though, I'm starting to shift blame away from politicians like this and more so to our dumb a** populous. If everyone did their research, educated themselves and made informed decisions during elections, demented people like this wouldn't be in office (or at least not to the degree they are now).
At some point we as citizens are to blame for this sh*t show. "Fool me once...."

Do those idiots really think jumping up pay by $3/hr is sustainable over the long term?

So.........raising minimum wage annually will do what for the inflation rate for all the rest of the workers in USA not making minimum wage and getting yearly increases?? Hmmmm.....

Two comments about this magical poverty line:
1. It assumes someone is in poverty unless they can afford such luxuries as television and gaming consoles, which is beyond ridiculous.
2. It will forever be a constantly moving target. It is literally impossible to move everyone above this magical poverty line because higher wages leads to higher cost of living as the cost is passed to the consumer. This is very basic math.

There's no excuse for being a full-time minimum wage earner.

Good. Price controls suck.

Only thing that needs to be said about this until it is brutalized in peoples' heads is "MINIMUM wage. NOT minimum LIVING wage."
The idea that every job in the country SHOULD pay an amount equal to the minimum amount of money an individual needs to self sustain independently is true communism.
There will always be people that are unemployable. Therefore, there will ALWAYS be people unemployed.
We should pass a bill that anyone that is deemed mentally and physically fit enough to work that has been unemployed for X period of time should be deported to their communist country of choice!
THERE IS NO PERFECT system.

This was nothing more than a political play.
Sort of like an ObamaCare repeal vote by the GOP.
I hate this shite.

Not a bad strategy for the Dems IMO, cast the R's as freedom hating and don't want you to advance yourself. Never mind that prices of goods/services will increase proportionally and their buying power will be unchanged.
