BTW, I read an awesome write up about this a few years ago. Its point was you either sacrifice now or you sacrifice later unless you are independently wealthy.
It is very true. If you make good enough money, you can go buy the nice sports car, nice house, land the trophy female to bang, etc when you are young. Or you can put all that money away and retire earlier and have an easier life when you are older (though you may or may not be able to enjoy it as much). It is all about sacrifices now or later and it is an individual choice if you make enough money to have those options.
So, your theory is, there is no possible way to strike a balance here?
ETA, Or just that nobody does?

yep people are different and there is nothing wrong with living in the present when the future is not guaranteed, at best. But 'Sacrifice' isn't equal to not doing what you don't have the means for in the first place. But nice try.

Priorities. People don't have their priorities straight. Luxuries become more important than necessities.

No, I said in the other post it is a spectrum that people fall on at all different point. Some in the middle, some at the extremes.

It is funny to me how all the responses are all sacrifice now for later because that is PERCEIVED as the "right" answer.
Well doing without food and electricity like this woman was preparing to do, while continuing to have a smart phone and eating out every day doesn't fall into your described category.

People have the means to spend their money how they so choose son.

Ego and stupidity.
It is important to remember that 1/2 of the people are below average.
This is also why the Feds take their tax money every check. Can you imagine no withholding and the ensuing brouhaha if these people had to write a check once a year for the full amount? I digress, but I actually think this would be a good idea.

t is very simple. You can enjoy more now or enjoy more later. Isn't complicated at all.
None of which necessarily relates to "living above ones means". Right?
A sad quandary arises though when the young spender grows old and jealous of those who saved while he spent.

Yeah for a lot of people living within their means is boring. They want to have fun, they want to have a good time and they want it now!
A lot of people have never learned to be content with what they have they always want more but don't want to save or work any harder for it.

I might add that this particular woman told my wife she would sell her body for money if legal, so there's that.

What motivates people to live above their means?
For most...enthusiasm for the good life, lack of vision just 'where' the good life is, and a lack will power to employ any wisdom they do have.
For some...flat out thievery, justified by the 'everybody does it' meme, as perceived in our highest leaders. Think Obama's first house.

It's a function of Capitalism in today's modern world.. Government involvement plays a major part in our current economic situation and has overplayed its influence. Until people can pull back the over the top materialistic mentality that is rampant within our system, we will witness people living above reality.. Not to say this hasn't occurred in the past but it is at a level across the board that I don't think we've seen. We should be concerned in the fact that we can't keep this up without expanding our middle class..

Yup. Young spender needs to look back at the fun he had or kick himself for fricking up, but either way, can't be jealous of the saver that has more later.
Choices. And neither is necessarily right.

Also, saver can't be jealous of the spender that has toys, women, and goes to vegas and has a lot of fun while saver sits at home not doing much in the earlier years...

Whereas on the backside, as savings have compounded earnings, the spender can't make up the difference.
Assuming maturity you describe, i.e., "look back at the fun he had or kick himself for fricking up," there is no problem.
Relative to the OP, such maturity is uncharacteristic of prototypical profligates.

Agree. Cept for that last word. No idea what it means.
