Not every American just randomly said, "Hey, that's the team I'm going to pick." I watched games and found that I gravitated towards Spurs. I like the players they had and the style of play. They were fun for me to watch. I did a little research on the club and liked them more after that. Over time, I found myself rooting more and more for them over other teams I had considered (Everton & Fulham mainly). Now, I would consider myself a "die-hard." I would consider my fandom's evolution about as natural as could be seeing how I'm 6 time zones away from England.

Not saying you're wrong to pick a team, and I get the idea of wanting to have a rooting interest, but I don't really see how you go from that to being a die-hard. Makes a lot more sense if you were, for instance, going to Finn's every Saturday and watching with fans of a certain team.

Well, I am one of the guys who posted a thread about picking a fav team (Arsenal) and being new to the EPL and other European leagues/teams. I agree with the majority here, having a fav team and being invested emotionally is a must for me.

Looking forward to watching Arsenal in the next week or so.

I don't see how going to a bar to watch games versus staying home and watching from the comfort of my living room has any bearing on the level of fandom. Some people like to go to bars and watch matches. Others don't. But given the fact that I follow a team that has a much smaller following than teams like Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and United, the opportunities to watch a match at a place with other fans of "my team" are fewer.

Hell, I watch Saints and LSU games from home every weeke (maily because I can't get my hands on season tickets)....but that doesn't make me any less of a fan.

I've been watching very consistently for a year. I tend to just enjoy it in general. I am attached to sunderland and will be upset if they drop but I will still enjoy the other matches.

It's kind of different because in American sports(save for basketball) our teams tend to cycle through periods of success more. Unless Arab oil money decides they want to invest in an unsexy squad in NE England , I'm not seeing sunderland win a title or likely even competing . Therefore I tend to look at certain bigger teams more favorably than others if I want to have even a remote rooting interest in world class football. I feel like this view will likely change several times as my knowledge of the game develops.

If given a choice between free tickets to a football game or watching the same game at my house on my big arse TV, I'm staying home nearly every time. American football, that is. I would, and plan to, go to England to watch a few big matches live. Both sports are great TV products. But there's no question which one makes for a better live atmosphere.

For my dad's birthday last year, my brother and I bought first row, 50 yard line tickets at Reliant to watch the Pats v Texans. I won't go back. That place was just crawling with drunk Messicans and white trash. I still don't know how that many poor people can afford those seats.

Being a die hard Saints and LSU fan makes sense if you're from Louisiana. It wouldn't if you were from Vancouver with no ties to Louisiana.

I only brought up the pub aspect because you would have a stronger emotional connection IMO from sharing it with friends.

I realize this is just my opinion. I'm not hating on you.

i dont really have a club, either. i like watching dortmund and some others, but i dont do nearly enough to be considered a fan.

i kind of disagree with you guys, though, in that it actually kinda bothers me when people just have random team allegiances. i dunno why, but it's annoying seeing people argue about arsenal and man u and their reasoning is because they played with them on fifa or some other excuse for clearly being a front runner. it doesnt bother me enough to be a douche (besides a couple posts in an anonymous message board), but it bothers me enough to throw out an eye roll or two when someone goes on about liverpool IRL.

Outside of United and Rangers, teams in other countries I liked b/c of players. Dortmund back with Rosicky and Juve b/c of Pavel Nedved and Del Piero.

I really don't follow Juve as much anymore b/c of the style of the Italian game and my general disgust for fans in the Serie A.

I started following FCK b/c I lived about a 2 miles walk from the stadium.

God damn some of you think way too hard about this front running bullshite. Enjoy the teams you enjoy. There's almost this sense of propriety now, like you should be looked down upon because you have no connection to the team you want to root for. I'm not sure that there is a point to any of it other than to look down on people for their choices, which in this context is pretty fricking silly.

Its mainly the self righteous Liverpool fans on here who tend to be new Liverpool fans and try and act like the club was never a giant.

fake fandom made me laugh though... Luckily for me I have a year long subscription to LFCTV (which I plan on renewing, annually) thus giving me a real association to my club... unlike some of you other fake fans...

Wait, you live in Europe? Holy crap, how have we never heard this before?

Seriously, though, that's a legitimate reason to follow a club. "I like the way Spurs" play is, IMO, a pretty silly reason to get all worked up about whether they win or lose.

Not as bad as people from Louisiana that follow Duke basketball. Or the thousands of people from Lafayette that follow LSU more than their own regional college that is pretty good in some years (for a non-BCS conference).

Even by this silly logic that fandom is defined by a certain longitude and latitude, the S in LSU should allow any resident of the state of Louisiana to follow LSU with impunity from this logic...

Why is it silly? If you enjoy watching a team, why can't you root for them?
