Very intriguing. Will definitely look more into them. They may be the frontrunner.

what difference does it matter if they relocate to you?
Not much, although I would kinda prefer if the team was in the US.

Since it looks like you are from Georgia, I would suggest the Nashville Predators. Another option would be the Tampa Bay Lightning.

I don't even care about hockey but hate the stars because of the fans. Dallas Stars and Mavs fans have nothing on Heat fans as far as being the biggest bandwagon bitch fans on this planet

Columbus blue jackets!
Young team who plays with a lot of grit. Bright future ahead with a stud goalie! Come jump on the bandwagon!

I can understand your hesitance toward choosing the Red Wings, as much as I hate to admit it they were the Yankees of NHL when there was no salary cap. Players came here because they knew they could win and get paid a ton for doing it. Now that the salary cap era has been around for a while, the Red Wings are a much more normal team.
That being said, Dallas Stars wouldn't be a bad choice

I know, and I specifically stated in the OP I'm just looking for some pointers, not necessarily to tell me who to root for. If I do end up getting into hockey long term, it will be because I pick a team that I am interested in and want to follow. If I pick a team that is typically dead last and just sucks in general that wouldn't keep my interest.
It'd be like if a foreigner wanted to get into the NFL with literally zero knowledge of the sport or the teams. They would likely enjoy a few tidbits about some of the teams so they can form an opinion, especially since not every team is on TV all the time to watch everyone.

They did have a damn good history of developing talent beforehand. I remember when 01 offseason came with Hasek/Hull/Robatille/etc all coming in that offseason

This is true, like I said. That's for every Dallas team other than the Cowboys. Definitely bandwagon! But they were near the top of the league in attendance in the late 90's & early 2000s during those playoff years. Since the Stars have so much promise & "might" become a playoff team for years to come because of their youth, it may rejuvenate the fanbase. Watch tomorrow nights playoff game and you'll see that arena rocking and the potential the fans have should they jump back on.
*crossing fingers* that this playoff run lights a fire under the fanbases arse.

San Jose Sharks. Great regular season every year, blow it in the playoffs every year. One of the best logos and color schemes in sports though.

I would probably go with Colorado.
-Can't be too good. I don't want to be a frontrunner/bandwagoner/etc. So it can't be like the best team in teh league
They were one of the better teams in the West this year, but last year I believe they finished dead last. So they've had a quick turn around under their new coach. You wouldn't be considered a bandwagon fan just yet.
-Ideally, would have something of a good history.
They have won two cups and have a pretty good history since they are relatively young (moved from Quebec in 1995)
-Has potential to be good in the near future and/or has a star player
They will be great in the near future (they are pretty great now). They are pretty great now, but they are very young and are loaded with young talent. Nathan Mackinnon is having the best rookie season since Crosby. And they have a crazy arse first year coach who is considered one of the best goalies ever (Patrick Roy).
-Nice color scheme/cool city.
I love their colors and Denver is supposed to be awesome (I've never been).
You should watch their current series versus the Minnesota Wild. The goals they scored in Game 2 were beautiful.

Red Wings
No matter what though, don't pick the Leafs
ETA - based on your criteria, I'd pick the Rangers

I'm liking the Avs. I've also been to denver twice and loved it.

Go with the Islanders
Haven't been great as of late. Made the playoffs in 2013 though. But they have some really good young talent.
4 straight stanley cups in the 1980s
As I said, young talent. They have a future star in John Tavares
Blue and orange. Currently in Uniondale, NY but are moving to Brooklyn next season.

Avs all the way. Been a fan since 95.
For all the reasons mentioned - they're young and not too good yet. They play an exciting style to watch since their strength is attacking so they rely on Varlamiv to stop everything. High scoring games.
Good core with Stastny, Duchene, Landeskog and now MacKinnon.

If you want to pick a team with a ton of youth that you can follow for the next decade or so with success, look no further than the Dallas Stars. The Stars have Jamie Benn (24), Valerie N (19), and Tyler Seguin (21) who are potential superstars

What about the Carolina Hurricanes? They used to be the Hartford Whalers, but became the Carolina Hurricanes when they relocated to Raleigh, NC. They moved to NC in '97, and have made two trips to the Finals, winning once in the '05-'06 season.

St. Louis Blues. Lot's of young talent trying put together the franchises first Stanley Cup. The logo is also awesome.
