Very true about the silver lasting 10 times longer than the colored. I had a filling replaced 3 times in less than two years that was colored. Dentist recommended the silver since it tends to adhere more effectively. It's been there now for over 5 years and no problems.
Comment posted about insurance not covering colored filling is bullshite.

Happy (or not happy) I found this thread. So we just got back from the dentist and one of my boys (5yo) needs two crowns and may have another cavity. The other (4yo) has 2 or 3 cavities that need to be filled. I don’t know where to turn. Without being condescending, the dentist basically said that we let them eat too much sugar and let them drink sugary drinks all day every day. Maybe every now and then on a weekend this would be true but they drink milk and school, water at home, and we floss and brush morning and night. Last year they each had one cavity and nothing else of note other than some plaque buildup that the dentist pointed out that we could be doing a better job of brushing. So after a year of fighting and “better brushing” and flossing twice daily, I was expecting to walk out of there like a hero with two clean bills of health. Instead we get punched in the nuts multiple times.
How does something like this happen? And are crowns really needed on a 5 year old?!
frick

Go for the cheap option or get 2nd opinion. Last dentist I had tried to sell me some crap for grinding my teeth when I never have before, no other dentist mentioned it, wife confirmed. Current good ole boy dentist I trust said my teeth are fine and I quote, “that’s what dentist’s do, we have to sell you on something”.

I know it is a Zombie thread but:
Where were all these students when I was teaching dental school?

Maybe they were there but you were just teaching in the wrong department....did you teach Gross Anatomy?

Just pull the tooth, kids are like sharks. There's always another tooth to replace the one they lose

Why would you cheat in dental school? There's only like 20 teeth to learn

I treat my kids at home with DentalZoom.com. If it’s a tricky procedure, I watch some YouTube videos for extra training.

For a kid the stainless steel crowns are used because the tooth doesn't have to be extensively prepped and the crown is fitted on right there. They are cheap and the kid will lose the tooth soon anyway. A pfm tooth colored crown like the ones adults get will cost you over a thousand dollars because insurance isn't going to cover it for a baby tooth. There are options for tooth colored crowns if it is an anterior tooth. Called strip crowns. They aren't crowns that are sent off to a lab for fabrication. It's basically a shell of composite (tooth colored filling) that goes over the tooth. They do break much easier. I'm just a student so an actual dentist can chime in. Also at 6 years old he is starting to get his permanent teeth. 1st molars and central incisors should be coming in soon if they haven't already.
You might want to check out sprig crowns. They are a beautiful zirconia alternative to SSCs. Our group has been doing them for years. They are as durable as SSCs.

Well amalgam doesn’t adhere to tooth structure at all, rather is held in mechanically sooooooooooo

Inquire about a tooth colored ZIRCONIA LAYERED stainless steel crown for primary teeth.... might cost a little more.
These crowns sux. They chip easily and are very opaque. Full zirconia is much more esthetic and durable. I’ve never seen a broken sprig crown.
