Looking to get an AR-15 to do a little hog hunting and or coyote hunting and to just mess around with. Any suggestions on which gun makers are the best and the best calibers for hog hunting?

Bushmaster, Windham, BCM, CMMG, Palmeto, many good brands that will do anything that you want.

Yes if you work at it. Buy sale specials, build it, and shop around. Start at Palmetto State Armory

Around that price point I would recommend a Palmetto State Armory (PSA).

It could be done...
Listen to the other posters and look around. You can probably find one. Good luck.

No need to save up to buy an overrated gun. He can buy a Bushmaster and get that.

Which is extra funny because the companies that source barrels and upper/lower forgings to Bushmaster also send them to Colt. You can buy a Colt AR with a Stag barrel, BCG, and AP forgings for the upper and lower. All of the larger companies that have gov't contracts will buy parts from each other to make up lots if they get behind.

If it's primary use is hog hunting I'd go AR10 personally.

Why? 300blk does just fine. So does the 6.5, 6.8, .458, etc.
However, the 5.56 will be the cheapest to shoot, by far.

That's gonna blow his budget.

Most hogs don't need .308 to be taken down, a good bit of them are no more than 100-125 pounds. For larger ones, a head shot will do the job, and 5.56 in 55gr FMJ or 62 gr penetrator will do the job.
You're not shooting trophies to keep the mount.
