I lost all respect for Henry Aaron 20 years ago. What he went through 40 years ago obviously messed him up pretty bad, because he appears to see racism everywhere to this day.

Like the OP, it pains me to say that, because as a kid, he was a hero of mine, as well.

that is the true irony of these types of comments by Aaron because without the support of "whitey", Obama never gets elected.

Link to where Hank Aaron suggested anything about ALL Whites? I think he was fairly specific in his comments.

MLB baseball should award him HR number 756. Hank still Hammering.

Hank is making too broad an attack on something with too many subtleties .

Aaron's record is still valid IMO. I just recognize Babe as the ultimate home run hitter.

I can't believe you agree with this nonsense.

Pop culture stars should not be role models, and as a society we would do ourselves some good if we regarded their opinions on everything not related to their profession with the same weight that you would anyone else that is not an expert.

Well said. Completely agree.

It's ironic because the Dems do more to hold back the black man and stop him from leaving his situation than the Republicans.

I agree with the "Yankees' fans are douches" part, but as I recall, the objection to Maris breaking the record was the new 162 game season as opposed to the old 156 game seasons when Ruth did it.

We can do that with every single rule change. We can do that with the change to the designated hitter for pitching records - changes to the ball material, infield fly rule - intraleague play.

The only "asterisk" in the record book was for Maris, and that would NEVER have been done to Mickey Mantle.

That is what drives the whole - asterisk movement - when the roid stars, (McGwire, Sosa and Bonds) were hitting homeruns, the announcers continued to reinforce that these records would be valid in the 156 game seasons.

Like that matters. Ruth didn't even play every game in 1927. He had 540 at bats to Maris 590 - but the pitching in the league was WAY better in 1961.

We can do this with...every...record...and...rule...change.

Was only done because Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick had been a close personal friend of Babe Ruth.

In 1962 (the year after Maris broke the record), Maury Wills stole 104 bases to break Ty Conb's long standing record of 96. No asterisk there.

You are correct. The GOP cannot be held accountable for the failure of Obamacare.......because not ONE of them voted for it.

Babe Ruth was the greatest baseball player to ever play the game IMHO. The fact he hit 714 home runs in 8300 at bats is a staggering accomplishment. Throw in a lifetime .342 batting average and no ones compares to this man.

3-0 as a pitcher in world series competition further distances Ruth from others.

How's your plan to kill/castrate all those white babies coming along?

See, I can make ludicrous statements too.

If we just limit the discussion to offensive players - although Babe did not quite reach 3000 hits (I think 2880+), about half of those were extra base hits. While he struck out a lot (~1330), he hit over half as many homers as SOs - in the #3 hole, ahead of the great Lou Gehrig, teams would typically "risk" pitching to him - if the bases were empty - and were more apt to walk Gehrig who was a .400+ hitter - Ruth's .342 is impressive today, but you couldn't stay on a good team hitting below .300 back then - the pitching was not good enough to justify that.

So, while I think a number of players were better - all around - than Ruth, he is almost certainly the greatest offensive player.

I would put his own teammate, Gehrig, Joe Dimaggio and perhaps even Willie Mays ahead of Ruth as the GOAT.

Good god.. The babe is the original home run king and is arguably the best homerun hitter ever.. Hank Aaron held the record and should be considered to have the ALL-Time home run record but it doesnt change the fact that The Babe was a more prolific Home Run hitter.

As for what he said.. I disagree and feel sorry for him that he suffered so much hate that nearly forty years cant cure. Maybe its time he let go of the labels.

What a shame. Hank was once a symbol of unity. Now he's a divider.

Very disappointing to see a personal hero - a man who faced down actual discrimination to buy in and espouse this terrible rhetoric.

Don't feel bad. Aaron was one of my favorite players, too. But he never was the sharpest knife in the drawer. Even when he was young his lack of education and thinking skills were apparent.

94-46 overall, with a 2.28 ERA.

To this day still holds a share (with Ron Guidry) of the AL record for most shutouts in a season by a southpaw with 9.

Ruth very likely would have been a first ballot Hall of Famer as a pitcher had he chosen to continue on that path.
