How are the transmissions now? Fit and finish? Injector pumps?

I'm assuming you mean the autos?

Supposedly they're better than they've been in the past. Not sure how to take that because I have no frame of refererance.

Excellent from what I've seen

Don't know.

All I've gotten out of my research is that VW's are extremely anal about scheduled maintenance.

Diesel engines last double what gasoline engines do. And with the price difference between gas and diesel being only 20-40 cents a gallon, it makes the diesel a great buy. I am looking at the Passat Diesel myself and it would actually cost me less per mile for fuel with the diesel versus gasoline. Plus diesel engines can take a lot more abuse than gas ones.

but i doubt mazda will ever bring it here--is that SUV enough? to me that's more soccer mom than sportwagen, but it's a great car.

There was talk of bringing it later this year, but it sounds like they are reworking it for the American market.

This is turning into a fallacy. Sure, the internals of the engine are likely to last longer than a comparable gas burner. Start comparing operation and maintenance costs over a 200k mile lifespan and you'll see the gassers are in the lead. You need to get well outside of the 200k mile range in most instances for the diesel to get ahead.

I own a 2007 VW 2.5L Jetta and have 133K miles on it. I have not had any serious problems with it and love it. I would recommend one to anyone, just replace the shitty Firestone stock tires asap. But I have seen some diesel Jetta's with 250-300K miles on them at car meets. Now those were older models, but I have seen them and multiples of them. Lots of people on here crap on VW, yet I own one and have had no issues people swear by.

Do it for the driving pleasure alone. I have the diesel Jetta sedan and it is great fun to drive. Agree wait for the new model Sportswagen but the Allroads version will not be worth the price premium, imo.

VW Crossblue concept (SUV hybrid diesel) is supposedly close to production.

Good to hear that. If I do get one it will be with the intent of putting much more than 100k on it. I'll put that on it in 2 years.

Wife has a jetta TDI. Do not expect for almost any car made today to last 20 years. The engine and drive train might, but all the plastic crap they put in cars these days is not built to last. We love the fuel milage and her car is pretty nice for the price, but I don't plan on it lasting in our houshold for more than 7 years total. It's 2 years old and has some pretty annoying rattles.

go to the rockies and get back with me. wagons are the way to go. dogs, gear, sleep in back, handle like cars, and the best snow/mountain cars come in wagons (Subarus, Audis, Volvos). Southerners don't get it. Wouldn't expect them to.

I'd much prefer a wagon to a sedan, but yes, in the south, we don't really need a Subaru.

Own a new VW and I think the interior was made from melted recycled legos. Wife bitched how bad it smelled in the warmer months.

It was my last...

Look for an older Jetta TDi with a manual.

OP, new diesels aren't at all what they used to be. Worse mpg, less reliable, more expensive to maintain, more maintenance, fuel is more expensive.

Not to mention the fact that you want to buy a first rendition of a vehicle. IMHO, don't do it.

They all have a bazillion miles on them.

I'm buying a brand new or very close to brand new vehicle. I'm done with old used shite.

Off-topic: i just drove the NIssan Leaf. Leasing one tomorrow. It's a free car in Georgia due to additional $5000 state credit (on top of the $7500). getting a used prius for cross-country driving (we do two a year).

with those two, i can justify my shorter trips in cherokee, subaru and big truck w/ camper.

it's like being a redneck and treehugger all in one.

next move is an efficient SUV or wagon for trips from Atl to beach and mountains (Appalachians etc) with a Livin' Lite Camper. that's where the TDI wagon or CX-5 diesel comes in. with manual trans, that's an easy tow for either.
