Strangely underrated - but most great guitarists who are also multi-instrumentalists are - but, yeah, extraordinary guitar player.

Hey mon, I love Frusicante too but Trey's live performances earn him the title.

Robin Trower is greatly underappreciated. He's the best I've ever heard live.

Impossible unless you break it down by genre and style. There is no such thing as an overall across genre and style GOAT musician in any aspect or form to say otherwise is to not understand music

And what are the criteria for determining greatness even within a single genre? Technical virtuosity? Speed? Feel? Versatility?

Exactly hence the statement:

Solid list. Mine would have to include Jeff Beck and Sonny Landreth. Possibly Tommy Emmanuel as well.
ETA: Agree with rabbit that Trower needs to be mentioned too.

Possibly Tommy Emmanuel as well.

The list of things that Tommy Emmanuel can't play is very short indeed.

Some to add:
Alex Lifeson
Adrian Belew
Buck Dharma
Devin Townsend
Frank Zappa
Billy Corgan (as much as I hate the guy, he can play)
Ian Williams

I've never really heard anything by the guy that I thought was super impressive. Admittedly I haven't listened to a ton of his music. Could you give an example of something that you think makes a case for him as a great guitarist?

Of all time I agree. But he was definitely the best guitar player of the 90s.
