Is MLB headed for a salary cap and/or a strike in 2016?

Lots of bleeding hearts bitching about the recent Miguel Cabrera contract being way too much and unfair to small market teams. I view it as a tax on stupid teams for signing declining players to debilitating contracts. (looking at you Anaheim)
Will contracts like Cabrera send baseball to a salary cap? I can't imagine that the players would want that. The owners on the other hand would probably be about half and half, if not a little more leaning towards salary cap. If this is the case, are we looking at a strike in 2016?
I say MLB has just as much parity as the NFL, NBA, etc. do. The only difference is that MLB has a few teams with shite owners (MIA) that just will never put the $ into the team.
I also feel that the salary cap in the NFL really waters the product down and prevents us from having truly great teams and/or dynasties. It's been proven that people love dynasties. It's good for ratings, as people want to watch them fall. Instead, we get teams that have a great QB, but have to field shite WRS or a shitty Defense because they're out of money.
A salary cap doesn't mean just the top spending teams win. You have to be smart, draft smart, make smart trades, be selective and analytic of who you extend, etc.

it's tough for me to empathize with multi millionaires going on strike because of unfair labor practices. this would completely draw me away from baseball.

There will never be a salary cap in baseball. Unlike the nhl, nfl, and nba,the mlb union is actually worth a frick

It's not that. It's when you were guaranteed a certain dollar amount and now they want to reneg on it because they want a commy arse salary cap.

i can't imagine the Owners would hold out long enough to get the MLBPA to cave... it would absolutely cripple baseball.
plus, they're paying these guys so much more than NFLers... they're more financially stable and better suited to handle a prolonged labor dispute.

I don't think the MLB will go to a salary cap. The large market teams wont go for it and they don't need protection from themselves. Also small market teams compete fine in baseball( rays, a's). I would hate to see a cap in baseball.

Which is surprising since baseball is sport, due to its regular season structure, that doesn't lend itself to parity.

Im thinking about it more and i don't see why the small market teams would want a salary cap. These big market teams often weight themselves down with a huge contract on a declining player and it makes them worse.

Every team wins 60 and loses 60...it's the other 42 that matter.
Those 42 are usually the 1 or 2 run games that could be won by either team that brings the parity, so yeah it's pretty unique in that regard.

And a salary cap generally comes with a stipulation that you have to spend a certain % of the cap as well, right? Or am I making that up? Could bite a team like the Astros as they completely strip a roster down to rebuild.

Why are MLB and NBA contracts fully guarenteed but contracts in the NFL are not? I guess it's because the risk of injury is so great, but I would think that the NFL Union would work to change that.

Right. all it would do is force the Astros to over pay free agents and players who won't really help them win in the future instead of being able to save up $ to plug in the holes when they're ready to compete.
