No one has mentioned Schindler's List yet even though it is technically more of a Holocaust movie than a WWII movie. I must shamefully admit that this is one of a few movies that I unforgivably have not seen.

Only one mention of Patton in 3 pages!

The ones in bold are outstanding. The others range from decent, to meh, to not very good IYAM.
I would add Empire of the Sun, The Great Escape, Come and See (Russian film-one of the best WWII films ever),
John Wayne is arguably the most overrated American actor of all time, but They Were Expendable is a fine, fine movie.
Rome, Open City (Italian film)
A Walk In The Sun.
The Story of GI Joe.
Wikipedia has an extensive list. I plan to go through here for ideas of ones I haven't seen. FX and shoot 'em ups are overrated, IYAM. Explosions don't necessarily make for a great war film. Some of the best have hardly any action at all.
If I had to recommend one and only one WWII movie, it would be Twelve O'Clock High. Watch it if you haven't seen it. It's on youtube in its entirety. Stalag 17 would be a not too distant second.

Holocaust movies shouldn't be considered WW2 films in my opinion. I don't know why but it seems wrong.
The exception would be The Pianist.

"The Counterfeiters" is somewhat of a holocaust movie. It takes place in a concentration camp. There are no explosions and very little gun shots.
I would recommend this as a top 10 WW2 movie.

The Thin Red Line and Patton are 2 of my favorites.

They really can't. My dad heard I hadn't seen it and acted almost as if he had let me down and we watched it starting at like 9:30 pm which was close to his bed time. He had shown me all my other WWII movies so it was fitting he get me on board with that gem.
I still need to see guns of navarone. And I'm disappointed that STILL no one else has Memphis Belle and I think only one other mention of Midway
