Harbor Freight generally has low quality but IMO almost everything that they carry is adequate for the average home owner's needs. However if you are purchasing for work or something that will be used daily then I wouldn't suggest HF.

I did buy an aluminum floor jack that works great in the jeep. For everyday use I'd question it's quality a lot more.
Been thinking about a large tool chest they have. 100's less than something of equal size. Just really need it to hold all my peg board shite until we figure out where we are moving.

Wiha is excellent too
The german brand Im saving for is slowly losing the ability for me to justify their orice because of Wiha.

not bad at all for the domestic user. most items work fine, I have a good bit of HF stuff all works fine.

depends really on the kind of work that you are doing...if you work in a clothing store and need a set of wrenches to use around the place twice per year, then I would say harbor freight is just what you are looking for...if you work at anything remotely close to mecahnic work, then don't even bother with harbor freight, as all you'll have to show after the first day is broken tools and busted knuckles....
harbor freight has the cheapest tools and power tools I have ever seen...if you need disposable shite, that is the place to get it...

I wouldn't buy anything from harbor freight except for things like a prybar or a square or something. shite that can't really break easily. I had a 3 lb hammer I got from there an swung it once and felt the head come loose. Pretty much everything I saw in there is junk.
If it's for casual use most of the stuff will be fine. Not good for the long haul.

Agree I like Kline screwdrivers much better
All of klein's products are well-made, IMO...

HF has some good stuff and some crap. They have customer reviews on their web site that seem to be legit. Plenty of their stuff is reviewed poorly. I have a Framing nail gun I bought from there at 1/2 the price of anything else and so far it kicks arse.

You can find Craftsman tools on eBay or Graigslist on sale. Klein are good tools and if your rich Snap-On

Definitley check pawn shops.
If not there I bought a little $10 ratchet with 1/4" drive on one side and a 3/8" drive on the back from Autozone I think. It has held up really well.

That's good to know. I'm about to build my shed and I want to buy a framin nailer. Did you buy the adjuatable model? I have a little 1 gallon compressor, will it run a framing nailer?

The Harbor Freight Pass/Fail thread on GarageJournal.com, and like has been mentioned previously, today's craftsman ain't your granddaddy's craftsman.

Gearwrench is the way to go. Get the reversible kind to keep from getting yourself in a bind.

All the guys in my shop own a combination of snapon, matco, cobalt and HF. If a snapon or matco tool breaks, you have to wait 'til the truck comes back by to trade in. The matco truck in our area retired 6 or 7 months ago so any tool the guys have that are broken are sitting collecting dust waiting on the next matco sucker.
We just recently got a new snapon truck driver but no one wants to replace their $400 air hammer with another $400 air hammer. So they go to HF for replacement and shite works fine.
A lot of them are starting to hit lowes for wrenches and ratchets because they're good quality and lifetime replacement. IMO, cobalt and gear wrench are on par with craftsmen of old. I've got a lot of 20-30 yo craftsman tools in my workshop at home.

Yea I like Kobalt stuff a lot and it's not outrageously priced like Snap-on or Matco

All I ever see at pawn shops is either junk or if it's not junk then the price really isn't that cheap compared to new.
When it comes to Craftsman, their warranty is not what it used to be, and as a working mechanic I found their gear wrenches to be of lower quality than the actual Gearwrench brand, and they were much more expensive than Gearwrenches. I used to go through a couple of the Craftsman a year, while I'm still using the very first set of Gearwrench band wrenches I ever bought.
Somebody mentioned a discount brand made by Snap On. I'm pretty sure the Duralast brand they sell at Auto Zone is made by Snap On, but I'm not sure it's up to actual Snap On brand quality standards. If these are tools the OP is going to be using for work, I'd always suggest getting the highest quality tool you can afford. They pay for themselves in the long run.

Recently bought a cobalt pass through ratchet/socket set. I love that thing. I wish I had it back when I was running nuts up/down all thread all the time back in the day. Now if someone made a pass through air ratchet, my tool-life would be complete.
