Had one for a rental this week, and the thing is badass. Thinking about getting one. Any problems I need to know about?

Just make sure the salesman haven't raided the first aid pack before you leave the dealership.

Trans cooler letting water in trans and killin it.
Valve covers leak and drip oil on starter, killin it.
If you dont change oil every 3000mls the timing tensioner fails, jumps time and bends valves.
I have had to fix each of these multiple times on NissanS.
If you keep your eye on things and maintain it like you should it will last but its not a Toyota

Never been a big fan of them but they have a guy down the road from my house with a bad arse Xterra. Spring over axle conversion. Custom 6" lift. Steel front and rear bumpers. 35" tires. Pretty sweet ride.

What type of mileage does this thing get? What should someone expect from a vehicle of similar size?

My dad had one years ago. I would assume they've completely changed, but I didn't care for his. Interior was falling apart big time when he sold it.

My wife drove a 2000 year model for 8 years. It had 165,000 miles when we gave it to my sister last year. It is a great car. I changed the valve cover gaskets, and I believe my father in law had some work done to the A/C before but other than that, it's solid. Gas mileage was terrible at roughly 17 hwy, but the steering and suspension were still very tight with all the factory components. When it came time to get a new car I wanted my wife to consider a new Xterra, but there was no pulling her away from a Jeep.
