To answer OP, yes I think pro style is thing of the past if can help it. Prefer the pro style arm with some mobility but throw first guy. I heard Saban just yesterday on Espn say he too prefers the mobile guy "if you can get him" for those of you green grass guys looking for miles to be gone.

Not sure you watch the NFL. If anything, Brees and Wilson are similar. Mobile pocket passers.

Brady and Manning or more statuesque.

Vick was an athlete with a hell of an arm who ran first almost all the time. Kapernick stayed in the pocket more last year until the playoffs.

As for the "QB of the Future". I think Miles likes the mobile qb, not just a running QB. But I think they would take the best QB they can get and mold the offense around him. I think that's a fair statement looking at the QBs on the roster.

People are going to have to realize that the game is changing. Bryce Petty scored 14 rushing TDs last year. Aaron Murray ran for 7 TDs last year in 11 games. Boyd ran for 10 TDs and 400 yards, Mariota 700 and 9 TDs, Winston ran for 4, Shaw ran for 550 and six TDs. Then you got guys like Bortles with nearly 300 yards and 6 TDs, Johnson with 240 and 5 TDs, and Waters with over 300 yards and 6 TDs. You know what all these guys had in common? All are ranked in the top 15 for pass efficency. You also have dual threats in there like Keeton, Manziel, Miller, even McCarron was somewhat mobile and Bridgewater is definitely mobile.

Except for Waters, Mett, and Keeton (who only played 5 and a quarter games), Everybody else scored at least 24 passing TDs. Even two of the next 5 most efficient QBs ran for 5 and 11 TDS respectively.

Is it just a coincidence that 13 of the top 15 most efficient QBs from last year are also very mobile?

Sorry but Brees can run and the other two need flawless pocket presence and Walls of China. Did you see Peyton get DESTROYED against Seattle?

You've got it all wrong. Miles is looking for QB's who can chuck it from the pocket but take off when they need to. Think Matt Mauck, JaMarcus as a JR., and Matt Flynn. He's not looking for a QB that has very limited mobility (Mett, Jarrett Lee) or a QB with happy feet (JJ).

Having a duel-threat guy adds a new dimension of play calling that keeps defenses on their toes. It adds a third phase of gameplanning for a DC because a duel threat guy can simply make big plays by himself. Whereas it used to be run defense/pass defense, now becomes run defense/pass defense/who contains the QB? The versatility of having a quarterback who can run with his feet and throw is almost a higher priority than the prototypical big arm drop back passer in recruiting. The game that changed everything was the 2006 national championship between Texas/USC. Everyone wanted the next Vince Young and the next Matt Leinart became secondary.

People are forgetting what has won the most championships in CFB. Good enough passers and great mobile guys. How much passing were they doing 40, 50+ years ago? Aside from Alabama's last 3 who mostly won with a game manager and dominant defense, the NCG has been won buy either a dual threat or very mobile guy 7 out of the last 10 years.

Our last QB was a pro style, but yeah, now its over for good.

Whoever is the best and gives us the best chance of winning.

All great posts. I have enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts. I suspect coaches across the country have to consider all of the above mentioned issues on how to proceed.

This is dumb.

Jennings and Harris are classic pro-style QBs, they're just more mobile and don't have as strong of an arm. Rettig is as classic pro-style QB as it gets.

Jefferson was a pro-style QB too. Same with Lee. Mettenberger doesn't need explaining.

Russell Shepard was the only guy that would actually have fit the description of what you're talking about. We moved him to WR because he didn't have the talent we needed at the QB position.

If you want to win the West, you have to beat Bama, and to do that your QB has to be able to leave the pocket.

I don't understand. Are you trying to argue Jefferson was a dual-threat? Or perhaps a no-threat? Because the former is wrong based upon his classification coming out of high school. The latter is a really lame joke that's been made too many times.

In 4 years at LSU, JJ had 678 pass attempts and 357 rush attempts. Sorry, but a pro style QB wouldnt have a pass to run ratio of less than 2:1. Thats a running QB.

JJ was a pro style QB coming out of high school (watch some of his tape), it's even listed on a couple sites. JJ didn't even run the offense until year three because Crowton wanted to add even more crap to the offense. If we had developed him as a pass first QB, he would have been that. I mean shite, he passed for the same amount of times as Mett did last year in his first year starting. The guy had no run game and he had the most horrific offensive line I've seen. in 2009 the whole RB squad (I'm even adding Russell Shepard) had a little bit more rushing yardage than Jeremy Hill had in 2013. In 2013, Jeremy Hill himself had more TDs than the ENTIRE RUSHING TEAM in 2009. He was off by 3 in 2012 and he only truly played in 8 games.

JJ was a pro style pocket passer who was turned into a running back and not taught any technique as a passer.

Dont really care what he was listed at coming out of high school. Brandon Harris and Anthony Jennings were listed as dual threat QBs, but they are pro style QBs. What they are listed as doesnt mean too much. Some guys are listed as offensive guys, but end of playing D in college and vice versa.

And all of that is great and all, but at LSU JJ was not a pro style QB.

Unless you dedicate your offensive philosophy to a running QB game plan, you can recruit both types of QBs, as long as the dual threat QB, is a true DUAL threat.

Harris is compared to Robert Griffin III.

Wouldn't you love to have RG3 at LSU?

And no it's not so much a running QB.. It's a throwing QB who can scramble and make plays. Huge asset.. even for a guy like Russell Wilson who is shorter than most QBs..
